I never quite understood
Your thing for old songs.
You always would say,
"They're not old songs,
They're good songs."
We'd drive around
And you would play your favorite album.
We'd eat Chick-Fil-A
And you would sing the lyrics
Into the red straw
Of your styrofoam cup.
We were at your house
One night,
In your basement bedroom.
You reached for your phone,
And played one of your favorites,
Sweet Emotion
By Aerosmith.
"C'mon...
I know you know this one..."
You grabbed my hand,
And pulled me into a dance.
It was fast
And slow,
Romantic,
And crazy.
You love Aerosmith...
I wonder if
When you hear their songs,
You think of me...
We were always
Dancing to Aerosmith.
One night,
Though,
You let me pick the song.
It was the first time
You had listened to
Dear Evan Hansen.
I played my favorite romantic song,
And we slow danced
In the middle of your bedroom.
I will never forget the way
You always looked at me
When we danced,
Like I was the most beautiful thing in the world.
It'll haunt me until I'm dead.
When the song ended,
You said,
"Wow... that song... SUCKED!"
I hit your shoulder hard,
And you laughed.
You said it sucked,
But later that week,
I noticed you had added it
On your Apple music playlist.
You added all of
My favorite songs.
One after another,
The Greatest Showman,
Taylor Swift,
Sara Bareilles,
We the Kings,
5 Seconds of Summer,
And, of course,
Dear Evan Hansen.
All the songs
You said were annoying,
You listened to everyday.
I wonder if they still sit
In your playlists.
I wonder if they're
Listened to,
Cried to...
Or ignored.
I completely forgot
I kept your songs on mine.
An old playlist
I decided to listen to
In the shower
Reminded me.
"You're calling my name
But I gotta make it clear
I can't say,
Baby,
Where I'll be in a year..."
I let the water hit my face,
I let all the emotions erupt.
It's like those words were meant for us,
Foreshadowing all that would happen
To you and me.
I go back to that night,
When it was the last time
We would be
Dancing to Aerosmith.
It was the last time you kissed me,
The last time we hugged,
The last time we said I love you
And actually meant it...
I won't forget the times
We were always
Dancing to Aerosmith.
I won't forget the words
Of love songs
You said painted a picture of me.
I wonder if you still have that picture,
I wonder if it shows up
When you hear an Ed Sheeran song
That was a perfect for us.
I won't forget that you
Always added my favorite songs
To your own,
That you remembered them...
You always remembered...
I won't forget how great it felt
To be dancing to Aerosmith...
I'm sure you have, though,
Because now you're
Dancing to Aerosmith
With another girl.
