~the next day~
When I opened my eyes, I couldn't see anything as my face is pressed against Hyunwoo's chest. I l leaned back to look at him, but he holds on tight and mutters something under his breath while asleep. I smiled to myself and started to run my fingers through his hair. He sniffs a bit loudly and leans into my touch. Reality started to set in that I won't be able to do this much longer. I didn't need to hear the results to know what they are. It has been set for a long while now. It is a miracle that I even lived until now.
"Stop," a rough and sleep laced voice says. I blinked rapidly and looked at the now awake Hyunwoo. Then, I withdrew my hand from his hair, but he grabs it and puts it back where it was.
"I didn't mean that...," he huffs and squints at me before giving me a knowing look. I simply gave him a half hearted smile and continued to run my fingers through dark almond colored hair.
Suddenly, the door opens and Hyunwoo falls off the bed as he tried to sit up. He sits up and groans before standing.
"Oh my god. Are you okay," I asked.
"My apologizes. I didn't mean to scare you or interrupt, but...," Dr. Park trails off.
"No worries, Dr. Park. I just....Did the results come in," Hyunwoo asks nervously. Dr. Park has a unreadable expression.
"You may want to sit down for this," Dr. Park says carefully. My heart begins to beat a hundred times per second as those words were tell tale words of bad news. Hyunwoo falls into the seat he had been sitting in earlier and holds my hand tightly.
Dr. Park takes a deep breath and says, " Kihyun ssi... Unfortunately, the results were not good. It has been determined that you are getting worst at a pace that we had not anticipated since we started treating you, and we don't know how long you have left. We, the staff in this hospital, will do our best to provide treatments to make sure you don't feel pain. As this hospital is a research hospital, we will continue to search for a treatment that works for this illness."
White noise instantly filled my ears soon after I heard those words. I couldn't hear anything clearly. My breath drew short. My vision began to swim. Someone is shaking me then holds me tight. I could hear muffled voices. I couldn't make out any words. Suddenly, I felt a pinch on my arm. In the next second, reality came rushing back. I looked around to see that Hyunwoo was the only one in the room with me right now.
He is hugging me, and mutters reassurances. I could feel tears dripping down my face, but I didn't feel despair. I slowly raised my arms to hug him back as I realized that he was crying too. He is trembling in my arms.
After a few minutes, Hyunwoo leans back and looks at me with puffy eyes. I wiped the tears off of his cheeks with my sleeve and then wiped off my own. He interlocks our fingers and kisses the back of my hands. I tried my best to smile brightly, but just couldn't do it.
"I love you," he says in quivering but firm voice while maintaining eye contact and forgoing saying anything else.
"I love you too," I said in a wavering but warm tone.
