"I hope whatever it was that was clouding your judgement is gone," Mr. Aizawa said as he took the test papers from Y/N. "I don't do this for just anyone."

"Yes, I'm very sorry." Y/N looked down in shame. She'd gone in before her eight am class to take her make up test for calculus. "I wasn't in my best mental state on Friday."

Mr. Aizawa sighed as he slouched forward in his seat behind his desk. "Todoroki isn't the type of student to speak on behalf of others, so I knew it must've been serious when he came and asked me to give you another chance. At first I was against it—I don't give anyone a second chance, especially those who leave a test half blank, but I also know you have what it takes to number one at this school."

Y/N looked at him in confusion. "I don't understand what you mean, Mr. Aizawa."

He rolled his eyes as if he couldn't believe he had to explain himself. "For example, Todoroki, based on the entrance exam results, is the top student, but what I'm saying right now is that you're number one in my class, and I've heard around that you're at the top of most of your classes. You could easily make it to the top, try your best."

Y/N nodded numbly, but she couldn't quite comprehend it just yet. She'd never been the best at anything. Sure, she knew she was smart and it felt like whenever she read, saw, or heard something, it immediately stayed in her brain forever.

It was like all she had to do was open a folder in her head and pick out the information she needed. Sure, she studied, but with everything she had going on, she usually depended on that for tests, homework and quizzes. Her life had so much going on for her to actually sit down and study for hours at a time. She'd have to find time to do so. For some reason, the thought of being the top student made her feel giddy with excitement.

"I'm sorry for putting you in such an awkward position with Mr. Aizawa," Y/N told Shouto as she slid into her sit during their calculus class. She gave him an apologetic smile.

Shouto turned to look at her from the corner of his eye. "Did you do well?"

Y/N beamed at him. "I knew every answer to every question."

Shouto nodded at her. "That's all that matters, I guess."

"Thank you, really." Her face softened as she realized it was the first time someone had ever been so nice to her.

"I already told you it was fine," Shouto reached for his pencil and started playing with the end. "It's a way of repaying you for covering for me the other day."

Y/N spoke before she was able to stop herself, "Were you able to get everything sorted out? It'd looked like you were in a hurry. Must've been something important."

Shouto's face had gone dark. His nimble fingers had stopped moving, and his mouth had clenched down. It sent a shiver down Y/N's spine. She'd spoken about  something sensitive. Crap.

"It's fine." Shouto replied cliply. His eyes narrowed at her. "You should worry about yourself." His gaze made it clear to her what he was really trying to say: Drop the subject.

Y/N nodded, but by the way Shouto had turned his head to look towards the other side of the room, she knew she'd hit a nerve and that he wasn't about to keep speaking to her freely. Y/N sighed inwardly, but still had a small smile on her lips. At least he's sitting beside me again!

...

"Is Shouto not going to eat with us today?" Y/N asked Uraraka as she passed around a tray of cookies she'd made the night before.
