When I was dressed, Nanny Gabby led me down one of the halls to a gigantic door that reached the ceiling.
She opened it and ushered me in, closing it behind me before I had the chance to tell her that I was going back to the room.
"Talk about throwing me to the wolves" I mumbled to myself before someone cleared their throat behind me.
I turned around to see my father standing up and smiling.
"Morning Kia" were mumbled across the table.
"Morning"
My dad had a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I heard you had a very busy morning"
I groaned and shook my head. I would've have said something about the maze I had to endure but my stomach growled at the smell of food. Loudly.
It sounded more like a pride of lions were somewhere close by. Snickers were also heard but they were not from animals. They were from my loving siblings.
Note the sarcasm.
As I rolled my eyes in embarrassment, I spotted a certain individual who was standing nearby.
"Liam?"
He smiled and it was as bright as I remembered. I missed my older brother. We were always close.
I ran to him and threw myself at him. His fault he didn't brace himself for me. I could hear a deep "oof" as I landed on him. He stumbled a bit before he wrapped his arms around me.
"I missed you Yim"
"I missed you too , Ara"
When I was younger I couldn't pronounce his name properly so I guess my 3 year old mind settled on Yim. And he calls me Ara because "you made me a new name so I made a new one for you."
I detached myself from him and looked him over. He was older than I remembered, more mature and he could've been my uncle instead of my brother. He noticed that I was staring and he just led me to a chair next to his. I was across from my sister and she was next to Jason. Our parents were on opposite sides of the table. I was next to my dad.
I looked at him as he settled down.
"How are you finding your room?"
I stared at him like he asked me if I noticed the sky was blue.
I let out a shaky breath. I wasn't going to lie to family.
"It's still a bit hard to wrap my head around."
He nodded with sympathy.
"I guess that is to be expected. You are technically new to all this."
I looked around the table and everyone looked at me with sympathy. It annoyed me. I didn't want sympathy, I wanted answers. I wanted to understand. It was frustrating that even with all the answers they've given me so far, I couldn't piece everything together.
"How about we start at the beginning?"
They all nodded.
"How am I a water mage? Did I wake up one morning with it? Did I get bitten by a radioactive water spider?"
My younger siblings laughed while my parents looked at me like I had grown an extra head. Liam just shook his head before looking to our younger siblings.
"It's a human superhero who gets spider powers by getting bitten."
My dad looked at me calmly.
"Before you were born, before any of you were born, your mother and I had a visit from the western sage. He said that he had been given a vision from the heavens. Our children would be given the gift of the four elements. In every life time, the heavens choose 4 supernaturals to imbue these gifts to. To maintain balance between nature and us. Often, they are individuals from different areas of Alaktasia but there's always four. When one dies, the next is chosen at birth."
I nodded and looked around. "So if I'm water, what are you guys?"
"I was given the gift of Fire" Liam
"My one's Air" Lavinia
"I got Earth" Jason.
I hummed as I looked back at my father.
"The mages before you were older and lived in seclusion. So we didn't actually know when they died or what elements you received. But there is one thing that made it clear"
I cocked my head. "What?"
"Your elements nearly killed you."
My eyes went into saucer mode.
"Say what??"
He nodded but my mum continued the story.
"When Liam turned 16, he was with an envoy heading West to the land of the witches. Stopped for the night in a little in run by elves. That night, the inn caught fire. And he was asleep."
I looked at him with shock but he had a thoughtful look on his face. He rubbed his arm absentmindedly.
"I didn't know what was happening till I heard them screaming. I was suffocating. But I guess being near death caused me to tap into my power. I controlled the fire."
I really should keep my mouth shut but the question flew out before I could stop it.
"And the other people?"
His face darkened. "Three didn't make it out in time. A family. They died in their sleep."
I could feel his pain. It was almost too real. But he shook himself out of it.
I wanted to say something but my dad spoke up.
"When your younger sister and brother turned 16, they were both in different places. He was in the Southern forest and she was in the North temples. Jason nearly died in quicksand and Nia was almost swept away by strong gale force winds. But they both tapped into their gifts."
They both smiled at me.
"And what about me? How did I almost die?"
My mum decided to answer that.
"You has always loved being near water. You were spending your 16th birthday by the great Eastern Sea. You were on the beach when the tides started turning. You saw a little wolf girl being swept away and swam in to rescue her. You had a rope that you gave to some servants on the beach to pull you back in. You got the rope to her but I guess the waters were stronger than you realised. You were stuck in a whirlpool and nearly drowned. But as the Liam did, so did you. You called out to the water and calmed it. You made it sweep you towards the shore."
Just when I thought my eyes couldn't get any bigger, my eyelids reached my eyebrows.
"Wow..."
They all nodded.
I glanced down and saw that my plate was full of all sorts of food. Liam was adding the 8th sausage to my plate. It was filled up with everything! Scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, fruits and oatmeal porridge.
I dug in as I thought of another question to ask.
This has to be the hands down most interesting breakfast I've ever had.
