After Julia passed, the wolves howled in sorrow. It was long and continuous, pulling at heartstrings and making all the non-wolves tear up. My sobs and hysterical cries joined theirs. Deaths are never easy...saying goodbye is always hard.
And that's where Rue found us. Hugging and crying, while she drove to the pack. The little ball of flame was in front of the car, almost as if leading her. I later found out that she had just jumped into the driver's seat and started driving, teaching herself to drive in the process. My mate was unconscious in the back...I felt selfish, I had abandoned him to help others and in my sorrow, I completely forgot about him.
I rushed over and tried healing him. His cuts and bruises disappeared but his strange aura stayed the same. He was cold and his skin looked greyish. It wasn't the healthy golden tan that he usually had. His face looked devoid of life and his heartbeat was unusually slow.
"Nia, something is wrong with him!" I shouted out for my sister. She was at my side at an instant.
She looked at me and looked back at my unconscious mate. "Go help the injured wolves. I'll read him and see what we can do." I gave her a look. "Go, I got this. They need you more right now. You've done the best you can for him."
I looked at him once more before I left them to go to where Erica was. She had the fallen Luna and Alpha taken away so that they can be dressed for the funeral. Werewolves were a hidden society here, so she explained that they couldn't have burials like we did, they had to be cremated. The healed warriors started putting the pyre together while Erica and I worked tirelessly to heal and bandage as many people as possible.
The pups, women and elderly people were hidden in the bunkers before pandemonium erupted. the warriors were only capable men and women. They fought bravely and most fought to the death. As I healed the ones Erica helped line up, I tried to emit a warm feeling of empathy and solidarity. I had learned from healing many during wars that sadness over the loss of comrades and loved ones was necessary for healing. Even the anger and regret that came with it was vital. What I helped eliminate was the feeling of hopelessness and dread. The feeling deep shame that may cause one to escalate things further.
It was the best I could do.
While healing, Mason had set up tents for a makeshift hospital while Erica went with the warriors to the bunkers to call everyone else out. More howling and crying ensued. It was like living in a nightmare, a long slow dreadful dream that refused to end even when you felt like you were falling. I walked a few feet away from the tents and found Lavinia. Sitting beside Nox with a perplexed look on her face. Rue was beside her and seemed to be talking with the little ball of flame. They both looked up as I approached but neither made a sound or moved.
"What's going on with him?" I asked my sister, whose eyes never left my face.
"Are you sure you wanna talk about it here Kia? Its pretty horrible." The pain on her face was unmistakable.
I nodded. "Show me?"
She nodded solemnly before breathing out a sigh. I sat in front of her as she grabbed my hand and Nox's.
And just like that, the world went dark as madness and chaos surrounded me. We were in Nox's mind.

Alpha Lenox POV
It felt glorious to be fighting beside her again. The way her eyes shined and her hair framed her determined face sent the pride in my heart soaring. She was a magnificent warrior and a talented mage. Watching her battle again was one of my deepest wishes.
I tore through the witches that invaded her house, but their wounds seemed to be made of ash that disappeared as soon as my jaws and claws did their damage. They were being protected by powerful magic. I threw them in her direction when I saw her weaving her water rings around the ones she defeated.
The wolves from Blood Moon arrived and were ready to take away the prisoners when she was done interrogating them. The first one she knocked out was coming around and we had a lot of questions for her.
"Nice of you to join us." They had intruded on our den, they would not get anything but pain from me had their lives been in my hands. But since their heads were hers, I kept my voice as cold and villainous as I could.
Her eyes were narrowed as if she was disgusted by me speaking to her. Of course, I reined my beast in so that his dominance was barely there...and this watered down witch thought her magic was superior to mine. Pfft.
"By defying us, you have signed your death warrant, wolf." She spat out. "Mistress Morgana will have your head and your pelt."
To say that I wanted her blood all over my snout was an understatement. My beast shook but Kiara shot me a sly look before admonishing the prisoner.
"Tsk tsk...only I get to threaten him, castor." she winked as Beta Erica laughed beside her.
I was speechless. I didn't know whether I wanted to talk to her or take her to the bedroom. Being near her is getting harder, especially since she regained her memory, the need to mark her was getting so demanding. The bond was taking a toll on me for not marking her. My wolf was restless and ever since I heard her crying the night before, he has been sulking. He rushed forward today to show his mate that he was still capable of being the male she needed and wanted.
I rolled my eyes at him as I walked away. I could tell that she didn't need me so I decided to do a perimeter check. I told the pack wolves to go back to the house and keep an eye on the girls and the witches.
As they were heading back, something moved out of the corner of my eye, my wolf was immediately up, hackles raised and teeth bared. A sting followed, straight to the side of my neck before I started seeing black dots in my blurry vision. The smell was unmistakable.
A small yet potent concoction of wolfsbane and silver. Enough to put a full-grown wolf into a coma, but only gives an hour or two of freedom for whoever is administering it to an alpha. A sickly sweet voice spoke from above as I started losing feeling in my legs and fell.
"We are going to have so much fun, wolf."
And then, the world went dark.
