If I didn't have my super hearing, I wouldn't have caught what she said. But I did.

"If you want to be."

I wanted to be more than a boyfriend. I was her mate. She was my only. We get one mate and she was it. But I didn't know how to tell her. From what I've gathered, being a boyfriend is almost like courting but more intimate. I didn't have time to court her because of the war we were both fighting. The twins were too young to do battle and her older brother was the strategist and the brains behind the operation which often times left him behind the scenes, gathering allies and making plans. It left her to stand by her people and fight.

And she did. She was graceful as she was deadly. It was the first thing I noticed about her when the fight neared my pack. After ordering those who couldn't fight to find shelter, I went out with my army to destroy the invaders. I didn't care whether it was witches or mages, I wanted them off my land. But then I saw her. She wasn't using her powers but she fought like a human would. She fought with her ice blade and won. When the attack was over she ran to a little clearing with a waterfall. She stood for a moment before she knelt and prayed to the Divines. And a gust of wind blew past her, almost as if the heavens heard her.

That breeze carried her scent right to me. The minute I smelt it, it was immediately engraved in my mind.

Rain and roses.

My beast pushed forward and before I knew it, I was standing behind her. Her scent was stronger now. It was like a pool of spring water to my parched soul. She felt me behind her and gasped.

She turned around with tears in her eyes.

As we said that one word that linked us.

Mate.

I thought of all this as I carried her to her bed. She had left her hooded coat in the car and the shirt was riding up a bit. But I couldn't help the rumble that poured out as I felt the sparks that the contact gave me. Her almost light caramel skin was soft and her adorable lady like snores warmed my heart. I tucked her into bed and went towards the her parents bedroom which was across the hall from her.

I couldn't shake the feeling that we were not alone. It had started since we left that club. My alpha instinct was always spot on. I could feel danger from a mile away. And right now they were ringing bells in my head. Something was outside and it was not friendly.

I made sure to lock the doors so that they wouldn't enter neither could my sleeping mate leave. Her safety was my priority. I stood outside and sniffed the air. I could smell sweat and the woods. I smelt a small group of wolves hiding in the shadows. I closed my eyes and let the smell pinpoint exactly where they were. Their heartbeats and breathing filled my ears as my wolf's focus sharpened.

I was the Alpha. These wolves couldn't possibly think they could take me.

"If you're going to stand around all night watching me, that's your business. But I for one would like to know why you're on this property."

Growls were heard. And that was their downfall.

Before I could hear the next inhale, I was off. Faster than they could think. I took them down. Breaking bones and damaging some organs with my claws. Not enough to kill them, but enough to incapacitate them till I can question them. Besides, they were wolves. They'd heal fast.

I pulled up one by their collar and let my dominance pour out. His eyes were like saucers as I questioned him.

"Why are you here? What do you want with her?!"

He looked down and bared his neck as a sign of submission. "We were told that there was a rogue near our pack. We had to scout it out and kill him."

I was seething. "How dare you assume I'm a rogue, pup! I will not have you disrespect me this way. Where is your leader?!"

He whined pathetically. "He's back at the pack waiting for us."

"An alpha who sends his members to do his dirty work is no alpha." I spat.

He just closed his eyes and whimpered. "Take me to him."

But before he could respond I heard a cry that I never wished to hear again.

Kiara

I was so warm and fuzzy for a minute. I felt like I was floating. But a nasty growl snapped me out of it.

I shot out of bed and looked around. I figured that my bodyguard had carried me to bed. I looked out the window that overlooked the pool and and saw him grabbing a man by his collar. I ran down stairs and tried opening the doors, but couldn't. The bastard locked it and took the keys. I quickly opened the garage door and ran out to him.

Before I could reach him, I felt someone tackle me. I cried out but was quickly pulled up and made to face Eric. A hand gripped my throat and the other pressed my arms against my chest to stop me from moving them.

I tried kicking him but it made his grip harden. Especially around my neck, needless to say, I was basically fu-...

"Kiara!" He screamed for me. Just like in my dreams. His voice held the same panic. He turned to the guy behind me. If looks could burn, he'd be an inferno right now. "Let. Her. Go"

I tried to call for him but the choking hand was taking my ability to speak. And breathe. It was weird to think that this guy was literally taking my breath away. I think the worst things at the most inappropriate times.

The guy behind me laughed. "Oh rogue. You don't get to command me."

Uh oh.

His eyes started glowing. His fur was poking out as he growled. And his waves of anger were so strong, it took the guy by surprise which made him loosen his grip a little.

And that was enough for me to throw my head back and hit his face. He let go and I started running to him. But as I neared him, I saw a humongous black wolf behind him, getting ready to pounce. There were other wolves around him. Hackles raised, ears down flat. His focus was on me and didn't feel the attacker creeping out. It was a split second and everything slowed down. The wolf had pounced and was in the air while Eric was slowly turning to see what I was looking at.

"NO!!!!"

I saw her looking behind me. Before I could grasp what was happening, I heard her voice thunder.

"NO!!!!"

I put my arms up to protect me from the attack but nothing happened. I put down my arms to see the dark brown wolf held in a bubble of water.

I looked back at her and her hazel eyes and skin were glowing, her hair as if suspended in the air and her pupils were turning blue. I saw her reach out her right hand and the bubble moved to where the other wolves were lined up. And in a slapping motion, it fell down and swept up the wolves to the left. Stopping above the wolf that grabbed her. She closed her hand and it fell on top of him. The water started returning to the pool.

Her eyes and skin slowly lost its glow as she collapsed. Before her knees could hit the ground I had her in my arms. Her skin was starting to cool down as she passed out. I looked up and saw the wolves piled on top of each other.

That was some slap.
