I fell asleep on top of him. I only knew this because I woke up after Nia mind linked me that dinner was ready. I looked at him again after I managed to untangle myself. He looked so calm and boyish when he was asleep but I could feel fear and sadness in him. Our bond was almost nonexistent, weak and close to being dead. I don't know what that witch did but I will find her and make her life living hell because of it.

It was hard leaving him alone in bed, but I knew that I couldn't do more. Without a healthy mate bond, he wouldn't heal faster with me there. I felt so powerless to help my mate and I felt so dejected.

Reluctantly, I left the room and made my way downstairs.

Lavinia POV

I felt her coming down the stairs. Her mind was a mess of worry, guilt and sadness. I felt sorry for my big sister. She was always looking out for me and protecting, both in Alaktasia during our childhood and during our time in the mortal high school. Mages were not the most caring of creation, so she was always a bit odd to others...but she never cared. She always did what she thought was right and never apologized for being the way she is. It was one of the main reasons I admired her.

I was a little shit when we were younger...always making fun off her size and playing pranks on her. But I was just jealous. It took me a while to realize that and ever since, our bond was much stronger. She was usually a happy-go-lucky type of person, but now she was wallowing in guilt and sadness. It didn't have to be a mind reader to know that. She was my sister. There were certain things a sister just knew.

"Chicken biryani and raita." I had made her favourite for dinner to help cheer her up. The pantry was full thanks to Jamie so it didn't take long to get started. She offered a tiny smile as thanks before she dug in. Or rather, played with her food.

Another unusual thing about Kia. She ate like a wolf but right now, she was just pushing the rice around her plate and taking little bites.

Rue, on the other hand, she didn't seem to feel the tension in Kia and was eating as she had never eaten before. But then again, from what I saw in her memory, she has never had a decent meal till she came here. Poor girl.

I felt the bond to her that I knew drew Kiara to her, but I couldn't explain. It felt like a family bond, but it felt much more important. She would become someone important to us.

I turned back to my sister and she was just doing more of the same. I sighed and shook my head.

"What are we going to do about this Kia?" I know I could've just spoken into her mind and received a reply but I make it a point not to spend too much time in people's heads. It's as much a safety precaution for me as it is for them.

Kia shook her head as her eyes glistened.  "I don't know, Nia."

Her frustration was almost reaching its peak. The last time I saw her close to being this frustrated, it was the first time she went to battle. She lost a lot of soldiers and as their Captain, she made it a point to visit every family to give them the news and deliver the bodies. Again, something that wouldn't usually be done, but she did it regardless.

She never let a man be left behind on the battlefield., alive, injured or dead. If they didn't come home, she didn't come home. It was her leadership, hard work and battle prowess that led to her promotion through the ranks. She eventually became one of the four generals when the Water General stepped down.

I was starting as a captain but I always worry that I'm not as good as her.

Suddenly, Rue sat up. Her eyes were excited. "San just linked me...your friend, the one who glows like the moon is here."

Just then there was a knock on the door. Kia stood up to open it and sure enough, there stood a wild-looking Jamie. She looked like she had just woken up after a long night of nightmares. But she still had her clothes from the visit to the circle's lair.

She walked in and started pacing just as I had before Kia pulled her into a chair too. "Jay, what's wrong?"

"I had a visit from the moon.  She called me to come here for her child. For Nox. She feels the poison in his body and it's killing him." She rushed it all out.

Kia was wide-eyed and froze in shock. "I-I...I tried healing him but I couldn't sense any poison in his blood. It tried everything to heal him...b-but he isn't getting better." Her eyes started to water as her bottom lip started to tremble.

Watching my happy, strong and powerful sister look so lost and weak made me mad enough to want to kill that witch myself.

"The poison has been in his body too long, it started to infect his soul. His soul will die, his wolf will die and all will be left would be a shell of a supernatural. He will become bloodthirsty and start killing all in his path. We need to intervene now!"

All of a sudden a mean ass growl tore through the house. Kia's eyes went straight to where the room should be as she started running.

"Kia! We have a few minutes! Detain him immediately before he becomes immune to magic!"

We all ran after her. Kiara's eyes were wide and wild as the tears fell down her face. "Jay, if you're gonna do something, do it now. It's getting harder to hold him!"

I created a little disc of air to keep him off the ground and out of balance but I noticed that my magic was slowly starting to lose its impact. It was sliding off of him like water off a duck's back. I reinforced it as Jamie started chanting and facing her palms towards him, her body glowing. Kia reinforced her water rings too by adding a few more, but they were slowly sliding off of him.

Just when it felt like our magic was useless, the alpha let off a soul-piercing howl that changed from that of a wolf to something more powerful and dangerous.

This chapter surprised me way too much...not at all how I planned for it go, but when creativity takes over, you gotta let it do what it does best. I'm currently 3 chapters ahead and am waiting for one of my all time favourite authors to give me personally to borrow some aspects of her creations. Don't forget to:
