8. Another Pool

I woke up drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. The dream felt so real. So was the man I saw. I forgot everything else but that man.

To be honest, he looked familiar. I thought long and hard before it dawned on me.

I'd seen him in my dreams before. Always from a distance. He was always so sad and lonely that I took pity on him. Every time I got close enough to touch him, I would wake up. His voice I now recognise as the one calling my name the day before.

I pulled my knees to my chest and looked out the window. The one at the foot of my bed was filled with soft sunlight. Gently warming my face and skin. And I noticed that there was a dress on the bed.

But not my bed, I thought sadly. I had hoped that this was all a dream, but I was mistaken. I was still in the biggest bedroom ever.

I stood up and realised that I still had my uniform on. With a groan, I looked around for my bag that I had packed the day before. I couldn't wait to get outta these clothes and wear something comfy.

I found it lying at the foot of the bed. I grabbed it and looked around for a bathroom to take a shower and wash off the grime of the day before.

And I find none. You'd think a gigantic room would have a massive bathroom and to be honest, I hoped it did, but I was mistaken.

I grabbed my duffle bag and headed out to look for a bathroom.

I kept walking along the halls, turning where I think a bathroom might be but had no luck. I was pretty sure I continued like that for about 20 minutes.

As I was walking down the hallway I realised that I didn't pay attention to where I was going.

Great. I'm lost.

Not knowing what to do, I started opening doors to ask for directions. But I just found empty rooms filled with random things. I found a room with dresses and mannequins. I found another with a flowers and it looked like a florist decided to go overboard with decorating. I also found a music room. It was filled with so many instruments I had to close my mouth before a fly flew right in.
There were so many rooms but not one person seemed to be inside.

I'd been lost and wandering for about an hour I think before I saw a woman rushing towards me. She was a bit shorter than me with with blond white hair. From a distance she looked to be in her late 20s or early 30s, but as she got closer you could see a few lines indicating age and the look in her eyes spoke of wisdom.

"Hi excuse me..." I started but she cut me off.

"Your highness I was looking all over for you!" She looked relieved. "We must get you ready for breakfast"

Before I could speak up she took my hand pulled me along.

"Who are you? And where are we going?" I ask in a rush as a trip a few times while trying to keep up with her.

"You'll remember me soon enough and we are going to get you washed up. Can't have breakfast looking like a filthy school marm."

I may or may not have taken offence to that but I kept my mouth quiet. She knew her way around here and I didn't. If she decides to leave my lost butt out here and disappear, I'd probably die of stinkiness, boredom and hunger. In that exact order.

I follow silently. The halls were long and almost maze-like, but I notice that the walls were in different shades of blue. Getting lighter as we move along, till it became white.

She caught me looking at the walls.

"They were painted that way to help servants navigate their way through the palace and also to confuse raiders and enemies if we were ever to be threatened. To get to your room just follow the wall till you find the darkest shade.

I nodded as we came to a stop. She turned to the blank white wall and waved her hand over it once in an arch from left to right and the wall opened up.

"Whaaa...." was the only thing I could say as I saw an arched doorway materialise.

She smiled a bit before ushering me inside. As soon as we were in, she waved her hand in the opposite direction and I watched the doorway disappear. My mouth was wide open. But when I turned around, my jaw hit the floor.

It was a pool that had little wisps of light floating around. It illuminated the dark room and made the water glow. It was mesmerising and the colours reflected on the walls and ceilings were astonishing.

The woman cleared her throat, breaking me out of my trance.

"What is this place?"

"This is your bathing pool."

I guess they haven't seen a shower before in Alaktasia.

"Ok, so I just hop in?"

She laughed before replying. "How else do you take a bath?"

I looked at her warily. "Last time I was this close to a body of water I was transported here. How do I know I won't magically show up butt naked in another place?"

She smiled, clearly amused.

"That kind of travel requires a specific kind of focus. I'm afraid that I'm your current state, that would be impossible."

I nodded and looked at her. Willing her to go away.

She cocked her head sideways before laughing out loud. This woman sure does love laughing at me.

"Child, I helped pull you from your mother's womb and wiped your bottom while you were in nappies. But on the account of your memories being altered, I will be waiting in your dressing room. Follow the wall till you come the aquamarine shade."

With that, she waved her arm and walked out and left me to do my business.

I took off the grungy clothes and walked towards the edge of the pool. I dipped a toe in to test the temperature and found that it was beautiful warm. I walked down its steps and and found that the water was up to my waist when I reached the middle but much shallower everywhere else.

I closed my eyes as I sat down and the cool feeling of ice in my veins started again. Instead of anger, my confusion fueled it. I leaned back and let myself float. As the surge of energy travelled up my spine, instead of it being channeled to my hands, it went to my head. I could feel my brain getting fired up.

Before I could stand up, I was pulled down into the pool.
