three years later

anna

"are you ready?" haillie asked me, as we sat in my car. i was parked right outside my old neighborhood; the best neighborhood i've ever stayed at.

i decided to come back home from college for a week and just look around and see what's new, even though everyone moved out already.

i gripped the sides of the steering wheel as i looked forward to the entrance. "yep." i said as i took a deep breath.

i stepped on the petal and began to drive in slowly. i looked around at my surroundings and saw the old bus stop i use to wait at while i was in high school.

i started to drive more as i started to see my old house. "my house" i breathed.

i noticed that it was a different shade of the old color that it was. it also had a big three in the front and the grass was green.

"anna." haillie says as i admired my old house.

"hm"

"it's joeys house." she says, blankly.

i turned my head and saw it, joeys house. i starred at it long and hard, trying to remembering if i can still remember his face when i haven't seen him in three years.

after my miscarriage, i kinda stopped thinking about him. i was pregnant with his baby for almost two months and he didn't know, and he still doesn't know.

i didn't move on after jacob and i ended, i wanted to focus on myself for my senior year and i did.

"do you wanna try and go in to look around at your house?" she asked me.

i unbuckled my seatbelt and nodded, "sure."

she nodded as well and got out of the car with me. every step i took closer towards the house my heart went faster.

we made it up to the door step and stood there. i knocked on the door three times before the door knob jiggled.

a little girl who looked like she was thirteen answered the door. she had red hair and blue eyes, a ginger you could say. she looked at haillie and i with a questionable face.

i cleared my throat and introduced myself to her. "hello. my name is anna and this is my friend haillie." i said.

"i'm emma." she says, lightening up to us.

"pleasure to meet you, emma. is there an adult home?" i asked her as i looked down.

"yeah my mom is, i'll get her for you." she says before she turned around and yelled her mom's name. "mom!" she says.

soon i saw a middle aged woman come down the stairs, she looked exactly like her daughter. "hello?" she said, confused.

"hi, i'm anna." i say, "i use to live here when i was  in high school and just came back to visit from my college. i was asking if i could look around. it's fine if-"

a smiler plastered on her face as she cut me off. "yes, yes, come in. we love company!" she says with excitement.

i returned her a smile back as she moved to let us inside. "this is my friend haillie by the way." i said to her.

"nice to meet you, haillie." she says as she closed the door behind us. "would any of you like something to drink."

"we're fine." i said.

i looked around the living room and saw how it was rearranged unlike how my old living room was. it's been three years and a lot has changed.

"so anna, how long did you live here?" she asked me as she took us into the kitchen.

"about a year or two, i moved out when i went to college and my mom went to wisconsin to go back to school." i told her.

"ah, what college are you going to?" she asked me.

"NYU, it's like 8 hours away." i said, "and so is haillie."

"what room was yours? the biggest?" emma asked me, getting into the conversation.

"yes actually, how'd you know?" i said as i turned to face her.

"when we moved in, i found a old shoe box with things in it. i didn't touch it because i didn't know what it was." she says, "is it yours?"

i widened my eyes at her words. "i didn't realize i left that. can i see it?"

"sure." she says as she left the kitchen. i follow her up the stairs as more memories came back to me.

we walked into her room and i noticed that she painted the walls purple, something that i was going to do but never got to it.

the bed sheets was also purple and was in he same place that my bed use to be. it's like the room i always wanted.

what caught my most attention was the window, it looked like it was pinned shut so you couldn't open it anymore.

"what's up with the window?" i asked emma.

"my ex boyfriend got caught trying to come in so my mom pinned it shut." she says as she digged through her closet.

"here." she says as she grabbed the box from the closet and placing it on the bed.

i looked at the box and ran my finger tips over it, remembering everything from that day. i looked up at her and glanced her a smile. "thank you." i said.
