Let's just not acknowledge a fifth of the population

I was showing my mom memes and stuff, and you know those ones that are like

Me: I don't like cliches 

Author: They called each other by nicknames until a big emotional scene where they use their real names

Me: Oh my god they call each other by nicknames until a big emotional scene where they use their real names

So I found a post with a bunch of ones with that basic format and showed it to my mom because I figured she'd find it funny. 

We can all agree that they're about a.) romance tropes and b.) cliches, right?

So I'm just kind of sitting there, watching my mom swipe through the post and suddenly she makes a face that I can only really describe as a very dramatic yikes. I didn't really get why because none of them are concerning, so I went over and read the one she was reading.

Me: I don't like cliches 

Author: He was actually looking at him instead of the view when he said "yeah, beautiful"

Me: Oh my god he was actually looking at him instead of the view when he said "yeah, beautiful" 

What's so bad about that? So I asked her and guess what she found confusing! There were two guys. She thought it was one guy looking at his own reflection and completely ignoring his date. This brings up a few questions, but I think we can consolidate them all under "what the fuck?"

We can put the fact that she literally gasped and flinched when she thought someone was self absorbed to the side for now and look at the more important thing.

I explained to her that it was two guys, and after the second time I explained it, she finally says, "Huh, I thought these were just guy and girl things."

Romance isn't just between a guy and a girl?????????

So later I realized it's because she grew up with no LGBTQ+ representation whatsoever
