It was cold and windy. White flurs fell as your own shoes crunched in the snow. You were in Leo's Memory currently, and the cold was getting to you a bit. Your team consisted of Fiona, Patricia, and Naib. Four ciphers have been done, and Fiona was using her portals to contain the Hunter with the help of Patricia. So it was up to you and Naib to finish.
You wanted to find where he was, instead of hopping on a brand new cipher. You were sure he had already been working on one so you jogged to the shack. Low and behold, there he was working on the noisy machine. You smiled and skipped up to the side of the machine, noting it was almost done thankfully. Although you startled the boy and he missed a calibration, shocking the two of you. You jumped and Naib covered his face with his arms to avoid seeing the bright flash. "Ah, I'm sorry for spooking you like that." You said, getting back on the machine.
But you seen he wasn't as eager to decode and finish the cipher as you were. "Hey, are you okay?" Your soft voice echoed lightly in the shack. You were worried enough to stop working and go to his side. "Naib?" You asked placing a hand on his shoulder, to which he flinched and grabbed your wrist with such speed you didn't even notice he did until a pain shot through your arm. "O-ow!"
His eyes widened and he let go of you. You pulled your wrist to your chest and rubbed it. "Sorry..." He mumbled quietly, eyes stuck on the machine as he shook lightly. You didn't really know what his deal was, but since Fiona and Patricia were pretty much bullying the hunter you decided it would be okay to stop decoding for a little while.
"What's the matter?" You said, coming up to him best you could, a little afraid he might hurt you again. "Nothing." He said, and his hands shakily wondered to the keys of the machine again. Though before his scarred hands could reach them, you softly and gently reached for his hands, intertwining your fingers into them. Like an instinct he clasped your hands tightly for comfort. "Please tell me what's wrong." You whispered.
The shaking only died down a tad, not enough to keep working. "I just got... scared is all." He was always seen as tough and cold, so telling someone he was nervous or scared, to him was probably humiliating. He obviously didn't wanna tell you anything, but his fear was very apparent, you couldn't leave him like this.
You got close and pulled him down to sit on the floor. His eyes lingered on you, knowing what you were trying to do. As much as he wanted to pull his hands away and stand up scoffing, you gave him a sense of safety and warmth, even in this cold weather. "Please." You said sweetly.
It took a minute of silence for him to understand and decide if he was going to tell you. "I got scared... because those sounds, it reminds of back then-." He cowered down and his eyes glossed over quicker than you expected. "Everyone would always die, they couldn't protect themselves, they didn't even want to be there... but they were forced to, like me. I tried to not make any friends but it was impossible, and that means that I had to watch people I cared about die-." His grip on your hands tightened as his eyes grew tearful. You listened and he shrunk into you. "I don't wanna remember that." He sobbed quietly into you.
Your eyes lingered on his back as you leaned over him. You picked up a lot from what he told you, when he spoke of those other people, you guessed he was also drafted. "Naib.." You whispered gently.
He didn't exactly tell you what he was afraid of, but the only thing he brought up that really bugged him was his allies dying.
He looked up at you, obviously humiliated he was crying in front of someone, let alone you. You took one of your hands and caressed his cheek. "We all care for each other, even if you don't really show it I know you care too." His cheeks grew a soft red as his eyes widened, still tear stained. "We all look out for each other, even if we are caught we end up at the manor. Plus you're here, and I know you do your best to save everyone." He grew embarrassed at your praise, shifting under your gentle gaze.
"Like when Helena was one hit and you protected her, or when Emily was chaired and the Hunter had detention, you still went to save her, because you care for all of us." He couldn't help the small smile rise on his face, and to that you also smiled. You started to stand and took him up with you. "We'll always be okay, so you don't have to worry." You cupped his face with both your hands giving him a giddy smile.
"Let's finish this cipher together." You let go and he hummed in reply. "Thank you (Y/n)... for helping me..." He smiled to himself hiding behind his hood as he started to type again, and you turned the gears.
The siren rang out, and you reached for his hand. You would be okay, he would be okay. Everything would be okay, as long as you were with him, and him with you.
