"You're so tensed up suddenly. What happened?" Arjun whispers as he puts on socks.
"No. I'm fine." I lie with a tight smile.
"Your face is pale. Just relax okay. ." He talks softly looking into my eyes. I swallow. My body feeling cold and hot at once.
"I'm fine." I exhale, trying not to sound breathless.
"You're turning pink now." He says as a matter of fact. Devoid of any emotion. Is this dude tripolar? Or I'm the one who's overeacting?
"I believe, enough talking about my face, right?" I snap. All the bloody tingles disappear. Humph.
He rolls his eyes and mutters, "Yeah, let's go."
And with that he gets up from the floor and stalks off. Blasted mannerless man.
I sit there for a few minutes. What is this? He being nice, me thinking the wrong way and exploding, he being rude and me feeling an empty pit growing in my stomach. These foreign feelings and his fiesty slash annoying slash bordering nice company is meddling with my head. I need to focus on the dance. Yeah and stop reading romantic novels and running your unleashed imagination wild, fantasising that your life is an adaptation from one of them my inner conscious snarls. Yes Alia, fucking stop. I get up dusting my butt and walk to him. Time to Waltz Prince.
"Shruthi is going to teach you the ballroom step. You're going to do it round the stage, in a full circle or semi circle perhaps. Both of us are going to do it and show it to you once." Miss Shona tells us.
Shruthi nods and smilingly asks, "who's the impromptu Prince?"
"You be the Prince, ask for the dance and the regular." Shona replies. "Ready ? Excited!" She asks Arjun and I.
"Yes." He says. I say the same. Neither of us looking at each other.
Shruthi plays the music and walks to Miss Shona, who's being Cinderella for the time being. Shruthi now and holds out her right hand, Shona places her left hand in hers and Shruthi pulls her into an open embrace, her hand resting on Shona's waist.
I turn my head to Arjun and bite my lip. He jerks to look at me at the same and time. I look away in shock, my eyes wide and shy that he caught me gazing at him, he does the same. This is soooooo noooottt niceeeee. I need to run and hide now. NOW. NOW!
Students start walking in for the class. Ohhh. Fucking great! The most embarassing scenarios in my entire existence, happen today! God! I swear to - (god?) , I swear to ummm, (Satan?) fuck it!!! I swear that this is heights of unfairness. I don't like you. Make it right, right now!
Shona and Shruthi look at each other while doing the "rock" (a basic ballroom step which involves moving front and back) and then Shona spins. They return back to the hold and repeat, moving a little every time in order to cover more space and move in a round. They do it perfectly. Dance is a dream. It can take one on an emotional journey, it's delicate, thrilling, depressing, sensual, hot, distant. It's a heightened feeling. Any feeling.
"Have you done this before?" I ask Arjun softly.
"No. You?" He asks.
"Yeah." I smile
"With whom?" He inhales.
I chuckle softly. Or grunt? Jesus my laugh is wicked. "My dad actually." I say looking at him.
He nods looking at Shona and Shruthi. I think he smiles, but I look away too quickly to confirm. Nick (last year's Prince) and I didn't dance too much, it was more acting.
"So, that was it. You got it?" Miss Shona smiles.
"Yes!" I say
"No!" Arjun scoffs.
"Okay, okay! Come here." She laughs. She looks so pretty. Happy. I feel good. Miss Shona has that little child inside her, that always keeps her so young and carefree. Her big eyes brim with glee as we walk to her. She's enjoying this!
"Face each other." She says. Two pairs of big glaring eyes stare at her.
Yep. I'm not freaking ready. But still, I'm the first one to face him anyway. He reciprocates. I keep my gaze down, a straight and stoic expression on my countenance.
"Um hello. Both of you. What's happening?" Shona begins in her perfected 'teacher like' voice. "Why are you acting so shy and hiding your faces ? You have to dance, that means you need to look into each other's eyes adoringly. Remember, the fairytale? The Prince falls in love with Cinderella at first sight. And the both you need to pretend to do that. Unfortunately however, right now you're failing horribly, moreover, in order to start somewhere, you must look at each other. Now! Look up!" She feigns harshness and tells us. This is harder than I thought. Especially with every single girl's eye glued at us. Like we're some interesting biology project explaining reproduction. Explaining, not showing you perverts. Bloody hell. I look away and gulp.
Sensing Arjun's penetrating gaze on my head (coz he's still multiple inches tall over my 5'1 frame) I look up to meet his brown eyes. Those eyes. Clear as fuck and brown. And not just for cringe's sake, but I could seriously drown in them, like how characters in the books drown. Flowery Malhotra! My conscious roars with laughter, falling off the balcony. Shit! I'm I? Fuck. I'm I drooling! No no no.
"Finally!" Shruthi exclaims, yanking my head outta my ass. Where is Shona? Not here. "Come close. It's ballroom dance, you guys!" How much more? There is just a feet of space between us, any closer and I'll suffocate.
Arjun takes another step forward toward me and I take one behind, distancing us again. Two sets of scorching eyes meet mine and I quickly scoot my ass forward. I notice there is exactly eight inches between his black sock clad feet and my peach slipper clad ones. He's in my personal space and I in his. I'm conscious about my body, fragrance, breathing - everything.
"Look up!" And I do it immediately. No more fucking shyness and awkwardness. I'm better than this pettiness. Alia is stronger than this. With a wild heart hammering in my chest, I lock my eyes with his. "Thank the Lord." Shruthi groans.
And it was finally happening, before I could even realise. So fast. So unnatural.
Is it always like that with reality?
His smile answered the question lingering between the two of us.
Yes. Yes it is.
