I was back at Rocksteady; I was sitting in the center of my room playing with my toy train when I heard the door open. I saw Father Alric walk in with a married couple beside him. They were planning on adopting me.
Father Alric was signing the papers for my adoption, but then I noticed that Julia wasn't with us. "Father Alric, where's Julia?"
Father Alric froze up, hoping that I didn't notice that. He put his pen down and looked at me. "How can I say this to you, James...Julia..."
"Your sister won't be adopted with you, boy. I won't have a frail child be in my family." The husband interrupted. He was a very intimidating man, but I wasn't afraid of him. He glared down at me, and I glared right back at him.
I grabbed the papers and ran out of the room. I needed to find my sister; I needed to find Julia. After checking all the rooms, I couldn't find her. While I was running, I caught a glimpse of a girl sitting outside from the corner of my eye. It was Julia. I need to get to her. I ignored anyone that was trying to get my attention; all of it was focused on getting to her.
When I got to the back of the church, I saw her. She was under the old tree making a flower crown. I walked closer, but I was grabbed from behind and pulled away. I looked behind me to see the husband holding me with both of his hands, looking furious. "There you are, you little shit. Now hand over the papers, you're coming home with us!"
"No," I shouted out at him, and he let me go. I ran towards Julia and stood in front of her. "I'm not going anywhere without my sister!"
"Brother, what's going on?" Julia turned to see all of us and saw the papers. She got very excited, but then saw my face and quickly knew what was happening. "Brother..."
"You're coming with us without your sister, whether you like it or not boy! Who would adopt such a pathetic and weak child? You should just leave her behind; she's only dragging you down." The husband shouted at me, and it only made me angrier.
I felt Julia grip the back of my shirt and pull back. That was all I needed. She didn't want to lose me just as much as I did. "You're wrong...Julia is stronger than anyone I know, you bastard!"
"James..." I heard her say with a strained voice. I didn't need to look behind me; I knew Julia was crying.
"You're such an annoying child. You're coming with us now! Give us back those papers!" The man charged forward and tried to take a swing at me, but I quickly turned to the side, bringing Julia with me. I dashed forward and bit down on the husband's hand as hard as I could. I felt the bones crack and break under my teeth. He tossed me to the side, and I slide to the ground. Before I could get back up, the man stomped on my back, holding me down on the floor. "You broke my hand, you little monster! Everyone is right, who's gonna adopt someone who is a complete monster! No one is ever going to love you or that frail sister of yours, so don't even think that adoption is an option for you two!"
"That's enough, sir. I see that you're not fit to be this boy's father, so I'll ask nicely for you to leave." Father Alric placed his hand on the man's shoulder.
"Tch, no one will ever love you, boy." That was the last words that the husband said before he kicked me away and left. I got back up and the side that the husband stomped hurt really badly. I fought through the pain as I walked back to Julia.
"I'm not leaving my little sister to be all alone; we stay together, Julia." I gave her a big smile, and she wiped her tears away.
"Thank you, James." She returned with a smile.
