Hyangmae Bae (Class 9)

Hyangmae Bae was born on the 1st of July, 1997. She was 16 when she died

Hyangmae's parents were from South Korea, but moved to China and had a child. Then in 1997 they had another daughter in Anshan. They named her Hyangmae, and taught her to speak Chinese. Eventually her father moved back to Korea in 2007, and Hyangmae followed him in 2011. Hayngmae didn't have difficulties adapting, even after she went to a 'normal' school instead of a multicultural one. Hyangmae was described as kind, beautiful and friendly. She often smiled, and she had a lot of friends. Her best friend was Dain Pyeon from the same class. Her mother recalls that she had a crush on Bratislava Eo from class 4. Hyangmae's dream was to become a fragrance developer.

When her body was recovered and her parents indentified her, they thought it was weird that she had bruised fingers. It showed the panic not just she, but all the students were in when the water just kept rising and rising.

Her body was recovered ten days after the disaster and returned to her family. She rests at Pyeongtaek Lakeside Memorial Park.
