Muggle technology is hard to get used to.
I'm still getting used to using the TV, not to mention my phone and laptop, and this thing called a PS4. All are pretty cool, but hard to master at the age of sixteen.
KNOCK KNOCK!
I fling open the door, and Sasha's waiting for me. Her hair is down, but a tiny braid hangs by her left ear. She's wearing a white shirt with plain denim jeans, and a letterman jacket.
"Morning," She greets me as I lock up the house.
"Hey. Nice jacket." I comment and tug at it playfully.
"It's Jenson's that I stole. Like he'll notice." Sasha rolls her eyes at the mentioning of her brother's name.
Cameron and Diara meet us at the end of the block, crossing from the street opposite us. The four of us talk about the dance, and Diara screams when Sasha tells her that we are going together. She pulls me aside.
"What did Cameron say?" Diara whispers.
"I talked to Sasha, and she says Cameron likes you," I whisper back as Sasha pops open her locker. Diara nods and opens her locker. Cameron fiddles with his folders and Diara takes some swim rosters from Sasha and the two post some up on nearby bulletin boards. The bell rings, indicating that it was time for AP English for me and Sasha. Sasha and I take our normal seats next to each other as everyone else files in. Sasha looks brighter than ever since I asked her to this Homecoming that I don't even know much about.
That is until we got a pop quiz in English.
"Pop quiz!" Mr. Sanders starts handing out tests, and everyone audibly groans. A kid in front of me hands me my quiz to keep passing back, and Sasha gets one from a girl in front of her.
"Good luck," She whispers.
"You too," I whisper back, and just as the quiz is about to begin, the class phone rings.
"Sasha, you have a phone call in the office." Mr. Sanders informs her, and Sasha quickly walks out of the room. She doesn't come back all period.
When English is over, I rush to find Cameron and Diara.
"Guys where's the office?" I ask them.
"Why?" Diara asks.
"Sasha got a phone call during English and she hasn't been back since," I say quickly, and Diara turns pale. She whispers something to Cameron, and his eyes grow bigger.
"What is it?" I ask nervously.
"I don't think Sasha would want us to tell you. Cameron, stay here. I'll be back," Diara runs off to who knows where, and Cameron and I make our way to AP Chemistry.
I can't focus. Will Sasha be okay? What happened? Maybe she's okay, maybe she had to do something for Student Council or swim or something.
Diara runs into class late and hands a yellow slip of paper to our teacher. She sits at her desk, and Cameron whispers to her. They motion for me to follow them as we leave class.
"Is this allowed?" I ask them as we walk out of the classroom.
"Diara got us out of class..." A piercing scream comes from a bathroom.
"Is that..." Cameron starts.
"Yeah." Diara whispers and runs to the bathroom. I tried to follow, but Cameron holds me back.
"What the hell dude?" I ask him, anger boiling inside me.
"Sit down. Sasha needs Diara and Diara only. It's personal matters." Cameron watches the bathroom door, and Diara comes out with Sasha. She looks so drained.
"Sasha..." I want to hug her, but Diara shakes her head. Sasha breaks from Diara's grasp and runs into my arms.
"Text me if you need anything, okay?" I whisper in her ear softly. She nods and Diara walks her out of the building. A black car picks her up and drives her away.
A mental breakdown, Diara told me.
How no one knew. Or at least that's what I thought.
I texted Sasha during lunch, but no response. I decided to stop by her house after school with her favorite coffee. I knocked on the door, and an older boy opens it.
"Who the hell are you?" He asks roughly.
"I'm Sasha's friend. I heard she wasn't feeling well..." I start.
"Listen you, she's not in the mood. So why don't you get out before I toss you over that fence." He growls.
"JENSON! Let him in!" Sasha yells from her room. So she's well enough to yell at her brother, that's a step. I saw his deep, dark brown eyes, and brown hair that faded blonde at the end.
"Where's her room?" I ask Jenson, and he points to a door with an ocean keychain on the door handle. I run upstairs and knock on the door.
"Come in," Sasha says in a soft voice. Her room is water-themed, with small lights that look like water droplets, a wave poster, and a desk that had the sand and sea printed on it. Sasha was laying in bed, her eyes sunken, red, and puffy.
"Hey," I say softly. "I brought you something." I hand her the drink, and she takes a sip.
"Thanks." She sips a bit more, and I sit on her bed.
"Are you okay?" I ask her, and she shakes her head.
"I feel like total crap, and mental breakdowns with me are not fun." Sasha massages her head.
"Yikes. Do your parents know?" I ask, and Sasha looks away, tears brimming her eyes.
"Wait, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."
"My parents abandoned me and my brother." Sasha blurts out.
"What?" I'm shocked.
"Two years ago, they went on this big vacation, leaving me and Jenson behind. My aunt lived with us and my parents sent money until Jenson was eighteen. They never called, emailed, texted, sent letters, nothing. They...they started a new family. And they aren't coming home. They called me for the first time in two years to tell me that." Sasha starts to cry, but not as hard as earlier.
"We went to court...and they gave us up. They don't want me anymore..." More tears, which I thumb away as quickly as I could.
"It's gonna be okay," I assure her as she sinks back into her bed. She sits up again, and gets out of bed. She starts taking off pictures on a big board by her desk.
"What are you doing?" I ask her.
"I'm getting rid of their memory. I'm done crying over them. Let's do something fun!" She takes my hand, and I realize that she needs this.
"Let's go to the Pier that you like." I offer, and Sasha's eyes sparkle.
"Get your car and I'll meet you outside in five." She says excitedly as she dashes into closet.
