"Naturally," I huffed. "Just when there's something else I want to do, someone shows up and interrupts me."
Adrian chuckled. "So I guess this happens a lot?" I couldn't help but look at him and smirk.
"Interrupted right before making love? No. This is the first time...although I wish someone had interrupted it a few times in the past. But in general, there's always some person or another from my time that always shows up when I want to do something else. Whether its my landlord when I'm in a rush to finish a project, a fellow student who needs help ten minutes before a project is due, some person or another who shows up right when I'm about to settle back to watch a movie or something, when I'm trying to play a game I can't pause...you know what? I'm just gonna stop there because this list can go on forever."
I clambered off Adrian, as much as I didn't want to, and started to walk out of the room. I hadn't even gotten the door all the way open before I could hear Trevor arguing with someone. I rolled my eyes and continued to walk out of the room toward the source of the noise. Turning the corner, I sighed heavily at the unwanted guests.
"Well there she is," said the anal probe I call my brother-in-law, Michael Aarons. "Took you long enough, Tubby."
Mike is your typical ex-jock from high school: still tall, still idiotic and still hanging onto that glory he had in school and trying to lord it over everyone. Granted, the guy had a great physique and all that, but, at least to me, he was about as brilliant as a burned out light bulb in an Amish colony. To say this man was stupid was to insult honest stupid people.
He was still extremely tall, being 6'8", and still trying too hard to hold onto what hair he had left since he had bleached it to almost white blonde since junior high. His sharp nose reminded me of the beak of a vulture, which I'm certain he used to pick at me for every little thing he saw wrong, and his brown, nondescript eyes staring at me as if he was waiting for my response to throw out his next verbal barb made me want to jam a pencil in them.
"Hello Mike. Long time, didn't want to see."
"Hey! You better apologize to him right now!" my sister harped. Ellie, the perfect daughter, the chosen one, the one my parents absolutely doted on and loved above all others, stood across the room from me with her fists on her hips and her blue eyes narrowed in contempt. Her perfect measurements (cough * breast implants * cough) always drew the eye of every male in school. And in typical cliché fashion, she was the head cheerleader that married the captain of the basketball team. Now she stood here like a cobra ready to strike at the chubby mouse that I was in her eye line.
"Excuse me," Sypha began, "but who are you?"
Mike snorted. "Who are these people? We all know you don't have friends, so are they here to get money you owe or something?"
"You still haven't apologized, you fat shit," Ellie snapped once again. I could feel the anger starting to radiate off Adrian who stood behind me. I couldn't deny that I was angry and hurt, but more than anything I was embarrassed that Trevor, Sypha and Adrian saw how this dynamic of my blood family acted. I wanted to cry, but instead I stood to my full height and cleared my throat.
"Ellie, I refuse to apologize to that science experiment gone wrong you call a husband. He came into MY home and insulted me in front of MY friends. He should be in a cage with the rest of the diseased monkeys before we have to worry about running zombies 28 days from now."
Staying as dignified as I could while Ellie's eyes widened with incredulousness, I turned my head toward Trevor and Sypha. "This is my sister Ellie and her husband Mike. Mike, Ellie, these are my friends Trevor and Sypha. And this gentleman behind me is my boyfriend Adrian."
