I couldn't open my eyes. The darkness that filled my vision was slowly getting darker and darker while my temperature rose higher. I felt as if someone had tied me to a spit and began rotisserie style cooking me, my body felt that hot. The pain was all I could feel and all the voices of concern faded from around me.

"Come back! Please?!"

No matter how loudly I called out or how intense my desire to be heard, no one answered my pleas for help. The darkness refused to let me go, and I was beginning to despair.

"I'm alone....again."

Something was coming closer. I could hear it breathing, but because it was dark, I couldn't see where it was coming from. I tried turning around to see what it was, but found that I was flat against a wall or something similar, be it a shrub, tree, or bush.

"No. It can't be a tree. Its too soft."

Slowly, arms outstretched, I began my trek to find something that resembled where I was before. I could have sworn I was in the entrance. Last I remembered was seeing the night creatures coming closer, but we could be someplace completely different now. I didn't know, and this damn darkness wasn't letting up to allow me to see my surroundings.

"Adrian?! Sypha?! Trevor?! Can you hear me?! Help me! I can't see you!"

I felt my throat going dry, my arm felt like it was burning, I could feel the tears rolling down my cheeks as the inky blackness wrapped around me like an unwanted hug and trapped me with the growing anxieties that made my heart hurt. I could still hear that...thing...coming closer while the darkness made it impossible to see from what direction. Next thing I knew something struck my face, the impact of whatever it was threw me to the ground.

"Who's there? Who are you?"

Whatever it was didn't answer me. Instead of a reply, a raspy chuckle that sounded like dry leaves in a whirlwind reached my ears and sent a chill down my spine. The menace in that sound triggered my need to run away, my desire to be anywhere but where I was, but my legs refused to listen to my urgent commands. It was if I'd been paralyzed and glued to the spot and nothing I said or did would allow me to do otherwise.

"You didn't think they really cared for you, did you?"

"What? Who are you?"

"You're deluding yourself to think that they care at all."

"That's not true!" I screamed at the voice that echoed around me.

"Really? You think I'm wrong?"

"Of course you're wrong!" I let my confidence come through in my voice, a sheer sense of victory as I let the truth in my words convey my innermost beliefs.

"Ask yourself something for me?"

"What?" I asked filled with trepidation. Somehow I knew that what would come next would hurt me.

"If they care about you so much, where are they?"

For a few moments I believed that she would wake up. I believed that this would simply pass the moment that medicine touched her arm that the burning, crackling and smoking would stop, she'd be asleep for a few more moments and then her eyes would slide open and we could go back to our original plans. I believed for just a few moments that she would wake and I could hold her in my arms where I could feel her warmth, hear her voice and her laugh, and I could show her just how much I cared for her and wanted, more than anything, for her to know that I was proud of her for what she did. I wanted her to wake to know that I was impressed with her strength, her resolve, her intelligence and with her fearlessness. How she protected me and everyone with her selfless act and how her quick thinking saved us all. I believed that I would be able to hold her in my arms and tell her everything I was thinking right at this moment...but her eyes never opened.
