There were so many dresses that would have looked good on Y/N that my head spun. It wasn't often that I got to spend so much time with my daughter-in-law and, if I'm truly honest, it took a lot out of me to keep away from her all this time. I knew where she was, knew what schools she went to, how well she did in class, the torture she endured at the hands of her mother and sister, the indignation she was subjected to by the man her own mother paid to date her. Everything. It upset me even more when I realized that if I did anything to change it meeting her, being saved from Hell, and my son being saved from himself would never have happened.
And, if I'm brutally honest, I can recall many a time that I had to be the reasonable one with my husband and children wanting nothing more than to harm her family. And every single time we sat down and had this conversation about what it would change if we did. It had gotten so bad that we had to leave the country for a few years just to make sure we wouldn't be tempted to do bodily harm to her sister and brother-in-law.
Then there was when we saw ourselves with Trevor and Sypha in Walmart. I don't think I ever truly appreciated end caps as much as I did that night. Plus I started to recall hearing my husband laughing when he was nowhere near me or my own hair disappearing round corners. The oddest one was seeing my son Hugue looking right at me before I'd even had him. Smirking to myself for my own stupidity, I moved back over to where Reggie and Y/N were, thankful for all those times I got to see her as she grew up.
"This one isn't too bad," Reggie said as she pulled out a soft white dress that had a large bustle on the back tied with a silk over-sized ribbon. I could almost hear the remark before it was said:
"Nope. I have a big enough ass as it is. I don't need something made specifically to make my ass look bigger."
"But Adrian likes your ass," I mentioned from around the corner, and was rewarded with a deep red blush when I came toward her.
"I know," she muttered, "but I still don't need eighteen pounds of fabric sitting on my ass like a pelican on the wharf."
"Like I said," Jayden said, "Gothic weddings are getting pretty popular nowadays, so you could get any color dress and just work some magic with that."
"In that case, she could just wear the same dress she had for Halloween," Reggie offered. "That dress was brilliant and made her look like a goddess."
"Nah," Jayden said as she picked through some darker colored dresses. "You don't want her to walk down that aisle in a dress that he's already seen. You wanna get a dress that will make him drop to his knees and thank the heavens she was delivered to him. Something that tugs at hisheart strings and his todger as well."
"We don't want him humping her leg before they get through their vows, Jay," Reggie giggled out. "Although that would be funny as fuck."
"Hmm," I said as I looked through the dresses myself. "Now that I think about it, pastels just aren't Y/N's style. How about this one?" I pulled out a deep hunter green dress that looked as if it were made for the Fairy Queen Titania with it's leafy accents of various shades of greens and yellows. It would perfectly accent her (e/c) eyes and made them stand out against her (s/c) skin. With the right makeup look, she would look like an enchantress rather than just a bride.
"That's getting much closer," Jayden said. "How about this one?" She pulled the dress off the rack and showed it to us. The color was definitely enough to make her stand out apart from everyone. The accents seemed to reflect the light as the fabric shifted.
"Go try that one on," Reggie said with a look of excitement. I found myself feeling the same as Y/N and Jayden moved toward the dressing room. The pair of us waited less than patiently as Y/N was helped into the dress by Jayden, shuffling of fabric reached our ears and made us want to see her even more. Somehow I knew this was the very thing we'd been looking for.
When those curtains were pulled to the side and Y/N stepped forward, I saw a beauty that radiated from deep inside her. Through her movements, I could tell she already felt as beautiful as we all knew she was. Her eyes were lowered, a soft smile graced her lips and her hands lightly gripped the fabric to lift it from the floor as she moved closer to us. I don't know when I'd seen her look more beautiful, but I knew without a doubt she believed in her beauty and it was that belief that made her just that much more so. I clapped my hands together and pressed my fingers to my mouth, my smile growing more and more with the closer she got. She stepped up on a short pedestal in front of us and slowly turned around to give us a view of the dress from all angles.
"That's the dress!" I said, not realizing that Reggie and Jayden had said it at the same time. Y/N looked up at us an smiled even wider when she looked out at us. I don't even know when the tears started rolling down my cheeks, but felt them when I'd gotten closer and Y/N wiped them from my cheek.
"I think I'll take this one," she said happily. "If you guys have this reaction, I know Adrian will be surprised."
"He's going to love this one," Reggie assured.
"We just need to find the accessories to go with it," Jayden said. "You'll need shoes, stockings, a veil, and anything else you can think of."
"A garter belt and some of clips for her hair," Reggie offered.
"I have another idea," I added.
"What?"
"She looks like a fairy princess in this dress, or at least as far as I'm concerned she does."
"I know what you mean, and I have just the thing," Jayden crowed proudly.
"Let's get you out of that dress and get the rest of your outfit together," I said. "We'll also need to get a few other bits and bobs for your makeup look and work out what else you'll want for the wedding. Now that we have a dress and that fits a theme, we can start looking at the other things we'll need to build that for you."
"I'm so excited!" Reggie said happily. "You're gonna knock 'em dead, Y/N!"
We were getting ever closer to the day, and while her surprise dress would stop traffic, the surprise the rest of us had for her would be the icing on the cake for her special day. I was looking forward to it even more now and was beginning to question whether I'll be able to keep my mouth shut and images out of my mind so my husband doesn't say anything.
Going from rack to rack, we found the things that Y/N wanted to go with the dress she'd chosen. I was quite impressed with the things we'd found and was looking around for the dresses Reggie and I would wear as well. Somewhere in the midst of our scavenger hunt, Y/N had invited Jayden to the wedding as well and had gotten an immediate yes from the woman, and I was glad that she had. This woman had been instrumental in making my baby's bride feel like the beauty she really is, and I was proud and grateful to have her agree to come along.
We finished finding everything for Y/N's wedding attire, our own dresses we wished to wear and got them set for any adjustments that were needed. Y/N decided she would wear a higher heel to keep her dress from dragging on the ground, but the rest of us weren't as comfortable being that high up off the floor. Joking an laughing through it all, we finished getting the dresses set for adjustments, bid a fond farewell to Jayden and went home that night excited and happy.
