IT WAS EXACTLY FOUR WEEKS until the start of a new term at Hogwarts. Exactly three weeks and six days until Harry Potter's coming-of-age birthday, in which the 'protective charm' that was set nearly sixteen years ago by Lily Potter would then be broken and he'd become vulnerable to Dark magic once more. And approximately three weeks and two days till Bill and Fleur's highly anticipated summer wedding. It had seemed that each and every worthwhile event was winding down to the last month of the summer holiday – and while exciting, it was also extremely nerve-wracking.
With Albus Dumbledore gone, the sense of safety and protection went along to the grave with him. Especially to those who had looked up to the man, and the ones that saw him as the only answer in defeating Lord Voldemort – it was a rude awakening to realize that the Wizarding World was completely on their own. Things could change with the turn of a dime in the very next second. There was no determined path, no more advice to be given, and no knowledge that could be passed on from beyond the grave.
It was also the same reason that a large number of people had decided to spontaneously change up their boring or outdated lives. Nothing was set in stone anymore, and all possibilities were on the table for the taking. Fighting against a clock that could strike the ending hour at any moment – there seemed like no better time to finally put your all into something that you truly wanted. To the population of the Wizarding World, having something good come out of the blue and earlier than expected was a far better outcome than possibly never getting the chance at all.
Or at least, that's what Remus Lupin kept telling himself as reassurance as he stared down to the matching gold wedding bands that he held in the palm of his left hand. The shimmering glint of the metal catching his eye as he tried to keep his breathing regular.
With a sudden but notable knock pattern to his bedroom door, immediately breaking him out from his worrisome thoughts, Remus hastily stood from the edge of his bed and tucked both rings away deep into his pocket, "come in!" He called out after another moment, taking a moment to awkwardly smooth out his jumper.
In strolled Sirius Black, grinning the bright and familiar schoolboy smile just as he had back in his youth, "hiya, Moons," He beamed, tucking his hands into his jacket pockets, "ready to go?"
"Go where?" Remus questioned slowly, his eyebrows furrowing slightly as he peered down to the dark haired man.
"You –" Sirius paused momentarily, his own eyebrows crinkling together, "did you just happen to forget that you practically forced me out of my warm bed to get dressed for a quote on quote 'surprise'?"
"Oh!" He immediately flushed a light shade of pink, fighting the urge to facepalm before he nodded, "sorry, Étoile," Remus chuckled sheepishly, "my mind seems to be a bit clouded at the moment."
