a glimmer of hope that was staring at me ❞

THE SORTING HAT HAD became motionless once more atop the stool as its song came to an end. A scattered applause broke out across the Great Hall, being punctured by whispers and murmurs between neighbors and old friends. There were shifty glances across tables, the hat's eery words of warning echoing in their ears. Adrienne, who had finally caught wind of the usual Ravenclaw sat amongst the Weasleys, Neville, Harry, and Hermione, had sent her friend a cheery-looking smile upon making eye contact. She waved and gave a nod of acknowledgment at the raven-haired girl. And while returning the smile, far smaller in size and perhaps more of a grimace in shape – Rebecca still felt uneasy.
For several happy years, But then discord crept among us Feeding on our faults and fears
The Sorting Hat's words echoed eerily in her mind, making her spine straighten involuntarily; much like she had been doused in ice water. Professor McGonagall paid the hat's words no heed though, returning to her long scroll of names to call out the first student atop the list to begin the Sorting Ceremony. Slowly but surely the line of first years began to thin out, Rose Zeller being the last to be sort and right into Hufflepuff – which made Scarlett beam and clap excitedly in encouragement. Professor Dumbledore stood then, making the Hall fall right back into silence.
"To our newcomers – welcome!" The old man stated brightly, holding his arms out wide, "to our old hands – welcome back! There is a time for speech-making, but that time is not now. Tuck in!"
With a mere snap of his fingers, and amongst the good-hearted applause, the start-of-term feast appeared. All five long tables groaned under the weight of pies, dishes of vegetables, bread, sauces, steaks, chops, and large flagons of pumpkin juice and giggle water. Though, even as they all began to fill their plates, Rebecca couldn't help but glance down the way again, over the tower of stacked pork pies, and right at Adrienne Samson. The blonde never noticed, though, far too consumed in laughing and smiling with her old dormmates and sharing cheery grins.
What with dueling and with fighting and the clash of friend on friend and at last there came a morning when old Slytherin departed
"Hey, are you alright?" At the sound of Scarlett's voice, the Ravenclaw snapped from her dazed expression, quickly looking to the side at the brunette with the concerned eyes.
"Yeah, sorry," Rebecca flashed a small smile, giving a slight nod before returning to serving herself a spoonful of creamed corn, "just thinking – I get far too lost in my own mind at times."
"What were you saying before the Sorting?" Hermione questioned from across the table, her, Harry, and Ron all looking to the floating silver figure of Nearly Headless Nick, "About the hat giving warnings?"
"Oh yes," The ghost hummed, turning away from Ron who was completely devouring roast potatoes and pork chops, "Yes, I've hard the hat give several warnings before, always at time when it detects periods of great danger for the school –" They all grew uneasy at his words, and it had peaked Rebecca's intrigue, "And always, of course, it's advice is always the same. Stand together; be strong from within."
