Tommy grabbed Niki's hand and pulled. The hybrid cried out in agony and ripped her hand away.

"Tommy, just go, go help the others!" She yelled, tears streaming through the dust that caked her face.

"No! I'm going to get you out." Tommy said and scrabbled to where her tail was pinched shut.

He pressed his back against one boulder and his feet against the other. He pushed. The helicopters where coming closer.

"Tommy!" Niki cried as a small piece of her tail flowed free. "You're doing it!"

Tommy yelled with the effort of pushing further, harder. He could do this.

"Tommy, behind you!" Niki screamed.

Tommy looked up and his face fell.

A boulder was rolling towards them, skipping over the other and gaining speed.

"TOMMY GO!!" Niki screamed as she writhed.

"NO!"

Tommy was not going to leave her and yet, he knew he wouldn't be on time. The boulder crashed against another one and sent that one rolling down the mound.

Tommy's arm touched a small shadow and he felt that surreality flow through him. Like he was somewhere else.

"Niki, I'm going to try something." He said and clamped down on her tail, pressing one hand into the shadow. He focused on that feeling before, when he had seen the world through a window.

The boulder rolled closer.

Tommy felt himself sink closer to the shadow, his entire body in it.

He heard a faint scream and glanced at Niki. she was looking right at him.

She was screaming at him.

Tommy wondered what she saw that terrified her so. It couldn't be him, could it?

Niki writhed in terror, trying to distance herself from him, from the boulder.

"Hold still!" Tommy yelled, trying to keep his concentration.

Niki froze, but it was too late. Tommy felt his connection to the shadows leave.

The boulder slammed into a rock and flew upward, coming down straight for them.

"I'm sorry, Niki." Tommy said and lowered his head, closing his eyes as he accepted his doom.

A sound like thunder rippled through the sky and Tommy's gaze shot up just as the boulder exploded into a million pieces.

Wilbur landed beside him, his white form glowing with power.

"Help me, brother!" He said as he pushed against one of the boulder that pinned Niki. Tommy took the other and shove it with all his might. It moved.

Niki slid free and onto the stone and dust covered grass below, sighing with relief.

Tommy ran to her and she twisted away, that stone cold terror in here eyes. Then she saw it was just him and she sagged tiredly. Her wounds where still open and bleeding.

"Are you okay?" Tommy asked, looking her over.

"Yeah, can you help me get to the water?" She asked and pointed to a pool not far from them. Tommy grabbed her outstretched hands and pulled her over, slipping her into the water.

"Thank you." She said before she slipped into the water and down, away from sight.

A mighty wind picked up around Tommy and he glanced to the hole.

The helicopters were in.

"What do we do, Wil?" He yelled over the thwack of the helicopters' blades.

His brother came to stand behind him, wings partially unfolded. A small streak of white hair hung between his brown strands.

"We're going to have to buy Niki and the others time. So we fight." Wilbur said, staring at the approaching enemy determindly.

Tommy nodded and they launched into the air, shooting for the helicopters. They would fight for the people. Together.
