Chloe stood in the grill line in the jr high cafeteria, patiently waiting her turn to order her lunch after deciding that the steak fingers in the main line didn't look appetizing at all. Her boyfriend, Jeffrey stood next to her, holding her hand. "I still don't get why your parents are making you pay for your quinceanera dress." The 14-year-old boy stated. "It doesn't seem fair to put that on you."

Chloe looked over at her boyfriend, slightly rolling her eyes. "They aren't making me, I want to pay for my dress." Jeffrey asked her why, not understanding how she could want to do that. "Because between all of Presley and Adam's appointments and medications, and Sammie and the baby, money is a big issue right now. I told my parents that I was okay with not having a party in the first place, but they insisted, so we made a deal that I could babysit and save up money so that they wouldn't have to pay for everything."

"Why not just ask your relatives to help? You have a big family, I'm sure all together you could afford the biggest party ever." Jeffrey insisted just as they got to the front of the line. "Two cheeseburgers, a Gatorade, and a water." He ordered, putting Chloe's meal on his account too.

She thanked him as the lunch lady got them their food, waiting to answer his question until they were walking towards their table. "Technically my family is paying for it. Half of my babysitting jobs were my cousins, and the money I didn't make from babysitting I got from my grandpas giving me different jobs to do. I spent two weeks last summer organizing their offices for them." Chloe shrugged. "It just makes me feel good to know that I worked for and earned this."

"I guess if you're working so hard, then you'll deserve a very special birthday gift." Chloe stopped just feet away from their lunch table and looked at him, her expression saying everything. "What?"

"Jeffrey, we're not having sex at my quinceanera." Her boyfriend asked why not, to which she responded with, "Because we're only 14!"

"But we'll both be 15 then."

"That's not the point, Jeffrey." Chloe started slowly walking towards their table. "I'm not ready for sex, and we will not be having sex until I am." She ignored Jeffrey's comment about how she might be ready by her quinceanera as she sat down next to her friend group which consisted of the other two Hispanic girls on the ninth-grade cheer team and a few of her friends from childhood.

Halfway through lunch, when the friend group had eaten most of their food, Chloe pulled the pink journal she'd been using to jot down her plans for her party out of her backpack. "Okay, so my mom wants to go dress shopping this afternoon including my damas, so we need to decide which of y'all are gonna be my court."
