Jin tapped the end of his pencil against his notebook, not even paying attention to his stagecraft teacher droning on as he watched the minute hand move closer and closer to the time school would let out. Finally, 3:15 hit, and the bell rang, the entire class of 16 to 18-year olds jumping to pack their backpacks to leave for the day. "Another reminder because I know none of you are going to remember on your own, next week we'll start meeting in the auditorium to start working on the set and props for this year's musical!" Mr. Madden called out to his students, not particularly caring if any of them actually heard.

As Jin walked out to his car, he pulled his phone out to check it, a smile immediately crossing his face at the most recent text.

He sent a quick kiss emoji in response before continuing out to his car so he could drive home.

As soon as he stepped foot in his house, a quiet groan left his mouth upon seeing the male sitting in the recliner on the far side of the living room. He didn't bother acknowledging his stepfather beyond that, heading to his bedroom to drop off his backpack and take off his shoes and coat before going in search of his mother. He found her sitting at the kitchen table on her laptop. "Hey, Mom, how was your day?" He asked, moving behind her chair and leaning down to hug her.

"It was good, how was yours?"

"Fine until I came home and saw him." Jin said bluntly, earning a sigh from his mom in response. "Why is he home and not at work like he's supposed to be?"

"He took the day off."

"Why?"

"Because he felt like having a day off."

"Oh, so he can call in sick to work just because he feels like it, yet when I literally have strep throat, he throws a hissy fit over you 'allowing me to play hooky'?"

Jin's mother rolled her eyes. "That was a month ago, Jin-"

"And it's still ridiculous and definitely applies in this situation."

She shot the 17-year-old a look. "I have no control over him or his actions."

Jin met her gaze for a few seconds before moving to walk out of the kitchen. "I'm going to work on homework." As soon as he was in the comfort of his room, he plugged his phone into his speakers and turned on a K-pop playlist full blast to keep him entertained as he dove headfirst into his assignments.

At dinner, he was enjoying his plate of nachos, trying to avoid looking anywhere near his mother's husband, when his mom gasped slightly. "Tonight's when you're going to stay with a friend, right?"
