"Thank you! Enjoy!" Luz called after her last customer. She twirled her pencil in her fingers and leaned back in her chair, foot bouncing with restless energy.
She'd found out that although being a portrait artist was fun when there were people to draw, it got pretty boring when there was no one else there.
Then she heard the door open again. "Hello?" A voice said timidly. Luz glanced up and stopped.
The girl that had entered her shop looked around the same age as her, with pale skin, short lilac hair, and bright yellow eyes that glittered like honey. She was pretty. Like, really pretty. Luz had seen some cute people in here before, but this girl was-
Ack. Her brain was short-circuiting. The only word she could think was pretty.
After collecting herself, she replied, "Hi! Would you like a portrait?" She said those words to every customer that came, but suddenly they sounded dull and robotic.
The girl didn't seem to notice. "Yes please," she said. "How much for a shoulder shot?"
So they got to work, arranging the chairs so that they were facing each other, with Luz's canvas just to her right.
Before she started drawing, the artist did another one-over of her subject. She noticed that the girl had black triangle stud earrings and subtle brown roots growing out in her hair. She noticed her politely interested expression, her amber eyes studying a piece of art on the wall.
Luz shook her head to clear it and started sketching. As she worked, the two of them talked. She found out that the girl's name was Amity Blight, and she was the daughter of Alador and Odalia Blight, who worked in mechanics and marketing. She found out that Amity had two older siblings, Emira and Edric, and that they often pranked and goofed around. She found out that Amity had pursued her dream of becoming a lawyer.
And Luz talked, too; she told her about her mom and her sister Vee. She told her about her job, and other people who had come into her shop.
Before she knew it, she was done. Luz carefully took the art off the easel and presented it to her customer. "Wow," she breathed.
The Latina had drawn Amity smiling; her eyebrows were lifted elegantly, and her lips turned upwards to reveal her shiny white teeth. Her hair fell gracefully to frame her face. There was a light dusting of blush on her cheeks, and her eyes seemed to sparkle. She looked like she could come to life at any moment, like all you needed was a remote to press play and she would unfreeze.
"This is beautiful," Amity said sincerely. "Thank you, Luz."
Luz beamed. "Of course! Thanks for spunking it up for me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love drawing, but usually people just sit there while I sketch them." She shifted, suddenly feeling sort of shy. "Hey, can I have your number? You're really fun to talk to. Maybe we could meet up somewhere else sometime?"
This time, it was Amity's turn to beam. "I would love that."
