Amity's POV

Why did it have to be you?

Out of everyone I could have taken interest in, out of everyone I could have fallen in love with—why was it you?

You, who embarrassed me in front of everyone I wanted to impress. You, who cheated to receive an award that, after years of dedication and hard work, was rightfully mine. You, who spread out all of my private words greedily, helping my siblings one-up me again.

I knew the answer to these questions, but I refused to admit them, even to myself. It had been so long. I hadn't let anyone see the real me in years. I hadn't let anyone get close, because I'd always choose the wrong people and end up getting hurt. So I chose to not let anyone in at all, to shut myself out until I didn't even recognize myself anymore. For me, it was a small price to pay for protecting my feelings.

Then you came along, and at first I didn't know what to think. You were acting rash and mean—but you shone like the sun. You took everything from me: my dignity, my future in the Emperor's Coven, my Top Student star; but you still tried to reach out to me and help me out of the massive hole I'd dug myself into.

My perspective on you changed after some of our adventures together. Soon enough, the 'bully' label I'd put onto you slipped off, replaced by one that said 'friend'. And I saw you. I saw your silliness, your bravery, your willingness to help others. I saw the passion and purpose in everything you did and said, and it inspired me. It made me want to become a better person.

As I saw more of you, I started to feel different around you. I was always jittery and nervous, and I thought about you constantly. I realized that your kindness had had more of an influence on me than I'd originally thought.

Well, you know how it went. I was in love.

And the craziest part was: you loved me back. You, who touched my world in such an unexpected way with your infectious light, who believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. You loved me.

And it was better than I ever could have imagined. The little things we did every day—little kisses on cheeks, comfortably holding hands, you flirting and making me blush—made me feel like I was on top of the moon. 

So why did I fall in love with you?

Because you brought me light. You brought me joy.

And I would do anything in the world to give it back to you.
