Luz pulled up to the gate outside of Blight Manor and texted Amity to let her know she was there. After a minute or so, she saw the doors of the manor open and a figure exit, closing them carefully and then hurrying down the long path to where Luz's car sat in the grass-ridden pavement.
Luz grinned teasingly as Amity opened the gate and stepped towards her. "Get in, loser, we're going shopping."
Her friend sent her a deadpan look as she closed the gate behind her. Luz giggled at her expression.
"I still can't believe you can run that entire way without collapsing," Luz added, nudging her head towards the stretch between the manor and the gate. Amity shrugged.
"You get used to it when you've lived in a huge manor your whole life. Especially when your room is on the other side of the dining hall." She got in the passenger seat and strapped in her seat belt.
"Fair." Luz shot her another grin and started the car, taking them away from Blight Manor and into the city. She put on the radio and let the pop song fill the air between them.
Light chatter was shared between them as they drove, and soon enough Luz saw the mall appear in front of them. She managed to find a spot in the crowded parking lot (which was a miracle for Bonesborough on a Saturday afternoon), and the two of them exited the car, Luz clicking her car keys so the car beeped.
"I'm so excited!" Luz exclaimed, grinning. "I haven't gone shopping in forever."
She looked over to see Amity's gentle smile turn into a red-tinted expression of embarrassment. "Yeah, it has been a while," she mumbled, staring down at her feet.
Luz frowned. Sometimes Amity would do something like this, and it always made her a little worried. Was she angering or embarrassing her friend somehow? Most of the time Luz thought Amity trusted and liked her...was she messing it up?
Her train of thought was broken by the two of them arriving at the doors to the mall. Luz let out a breath of air and pushed one open, holding it open for Amity and letting the bustling noise of the crowded place wash over her.
They started walking through the mall, occasionally stopping to look at something through a store's window. When they rounded a corner and saw a Barnes & Noble, Luz gasped.
"Ams, look!" She pointed at a display in the window that showed the newest Good Witch Azura book, looking as eager as an excited puppy.
Amity followed her gaze and lit up. The girls exchanged an excited glance and abruptly changed course to enter the store.
Luz immediately made a beeline for the fantasy section, searching for the book she had seen on display. Amity joined her, searching for the F section on the shelves. When she found it, she grabbed it and held it up. "Luz!"
The girl in question turned her head, and when she saw the book she squealed, causing a few people in their proximity to glare at her. Luz sidled closer to Amity to see the book better and they flipped it open to the first page, reading silently.
Once she was done, Luz fixed her gaze on the page, feeling oddly jittery and nervous from being this close to Amity. Now that she was focused on it, she suddenly noticed how their shoulders were lightly pressing together, and how warm her face had become, and- why did her stomach feel so weird and swoopy and like not how stomachs usually felt? Why did it feel like there were a million spiders crawling around inside it, or a hundred birds frantically flapping their wings? Why did her chest feel so warm and fuzzy?
