Bad Day

Luz sighed, huffily resting her face in her hand and her elbow on her desk. She was struggling with writing an essay for English, and she felt like she just couldn't get her thoughts across properly. Just then her phone's ringtone cut through her spiralling thoughts, startling her.

She accepted the incoming call, recognizing the ringtone right away and welcoming the distraction from her work. "Hey, Ams!"

"Hey, Luz!" greeted her best friend, her cheerful voice contrasting the dull, frustrated mood Luz was in. "How are you doing?"

Luz groaned, sitting back in her chair. "Trying to work on my English essay," she said. "I just can't figure out how to get it right and put my thoughts into words."

"You could come over," Amity offered, "then we could work on it together."

Luz felt herself smile. Already, the thought of writing the essay with Amity was ten times more appealing than writing it alone. "Sure! I'll be there in fifteen."

"Alright. See you," said Amity, and Luz ended the call after saying a quick, "Bye!"

"I'm going over to Amity's, mama," she shouted, packing her things (the essay, her laptop, her water bottle, and her pencil case, filled with crayons, pens, pencils and erasers) into her brown over-the-shoulder bag.

"Okay, cariño! ¡Vuelve a casa a las diez!" her mom replied. (Okay, honey! Be home by ten!)

Luz came out of her room and accepted her mother's embrace, saying, "¡Lo haré! ¡Te quiero!" (I will! Love you!)

"Yo también te quiero. Diviértete con Amity," Camila said. (I love you too. Have fun with Amity.)

Luz nodded as they pulled away, jogging to the front door. "Bye!"

She closed the door behind her before she could hear her mother's answer, walking quickly down the sidewalk in the direction of Amity's house. She was a little confused about why she was so excited. They were just going to be working on homework, even if it was with Amity, her best friend that she may or may not have a tiny crush on.

If she was being honest with herself, that was probably the main reason she was excited: having an excuse to hang out with Amity. Which was ridiculous. She didn't need an excuse, they were best friends! She could talk to Amity practically anytime she wanted!

Still, she couldn't deny the fact that Amity inviting her over made Luz happy, even if it was for homework.

Around ten minutes later, she knock, knock, knocked on Amity's door (I'm sorry). After a few seconds it opened up, revealing Amity standing behind it in a short-sleeved, dark purple jumpsuit and a black headband in her hair to complete the look. "Hey, Luz!" she greeted.

Luz smiled at the sight of her. "Hi, Amity," she replied, stepping into the house.

'House' was quite an understatement for the place Amity lived. Her parents ran Blight Industries, a popular security company, and her family was very wealthy as a result. The Blight family's place was spacious, with lots of rooms, and had robots serving as butlers throughout. It functioned as both a workspace and a home, with a stage near the back for Odalia and Alador to display their new products. Luz thought a more appropriate word for it would be 'mansion'.

Luz followed the youngest Blight to her room and put her bag on the floor, promptly sitting down next to it. Amity sat at her desk and turned the chair so it was facing her.

"So what are you struggling with for your essay?" she asked.

Luz grimaced. "Ugh, I don't know, just kinda...everything. And, like, putting what I want to say into words and getting myself to type them out."
