Gus and Willow met for the first time in an abandoned classroom.

At the time, they were both feeling a bit insecure about their magic, which may have been part of the reason they bonded so quickly. Another part was likely the fact that they were soulmates—something they figured out immediately after they met, even before they knew each other's names.

It had been difficult, at first; getting to know each other with the expectation that one day they'd fall in love. At the time, they hadn't even heard of soulmates that weren't romantic. It was foreign, with all the talk around them of people finding their soulmates and eventually catching feelings. They thought that when the time would come, it would come, and they would be happy being in love.

Except it didn't turn out that way, because that time never happened.

They had always been very close with each other, emotionally and physically. Comforting touches were shared without shame, affectionate words given to lighten the other's mood. This, combined with their matching marks, seemed to give off the impression to most people at their school that they were together romantically. They didn't mind. In a way, they were in love—although not in the way most people would think.

Willow was fifteen and Gus was thirteen when she found a book on soulmates that changed the way they viewed their relationship. Willow had been looking through books in the library when she stumbled upon a book that mentioned types of soulmates that differed from tradition. Curious, she continued to read as the book described that some soulmates weren't romantic at all. There were many types of love and many types of soulmates, the book explained, and they could come in the form of friendship as well.

Willow had sat there on the library floor, thinking about the possibility of her and Gus being like that. Friendship soulmates. Could it be possible that they wouldn't fall in love after all?

She had sent a photo to Gus, and he had responded with, Omg so cool! do you think that's us? I didn't even know that was a thing!!

Me neither, she had texted back. And maybe?? Unless youre secretly in love with me ;)

Haha, very funny. that's so fascinating! I had no idea soulmates weren't just a romantic thing

Me neither, she had said.

A new sort of confidence snuck into the way they acted around each other after that. It was more...relaxed. At ease. That isn't to say that they weren't comfortable with each other before, but knowing about platonic soulmates and that they had another option was relieving to both of them. They knew that the world might not understand their relationship, or the fact that even if they weren't a couple, they still loved each other. But they couldn't find it in themselves to care.

They knew that they would always have each other, and nothing in the Isles could change that.

A/N: I love Willow and Gus so much. They are the pinnacle of friendship.

Happy pride month!!
