In the months she had spent in the human realm after the Collector was released by King, Amity thinks she had adjusted fairly well to the new environment.
Over time, she'd grown to appreciate the slight changes that characterized the human realm—the green grass, blue sky, cars instead of staffs, and big, boxy buildings instead of ones of varied sizes with a more classic design. She'd grown accustomed to living with Willow, Gus, Hunter, Vee, Camilla, and Luz, and the comfortable bustle of their daily activities.
But somehow, even after all of that time, she still wasn't used to the ease that came with living with Camila. Amity had never quite been able to fully relax in the house, despite Camila's frequent reminders that she didn't need to ask before doing everything.
Here she was again, in the Noceda's kitchen, hesitating before using the food to make sandwiches for her and Luz's date even though she knew Camila wouldn't mind. Maybe she had gotten so used to her life in Blight Manor, she thinks, that she assumed that's what home was supposed to feel like—uptight and rigid, with respect and honour above everything else. It was so different from the Noceda's, with its safety and comfort and warmth, and she would be eternally grateful to Camilla for the care she had shown all of them, even when she barely knew them. With her as a mother, it was no wonder Luz was as kind as she was.
"Amity!"
Speaking of Luz.
Amity turned her head towards the direction of her girlfriend's voice as she walked into the room with a big smile on her face. She came up to Amity and wrapped her arms around her torso, resting her head on her shoulder with a little huff of air on Amity's neck.
Amity giggled, a familiar warmth rising in her chest. "Hey, sweet potato."
"Hi," Luz said, a smile clear in her voice. "Are the sandwiches ready?"
"No, not yet. I was just about to start on them."
"I can help you make them if you want."
Amity shook her head. "No, it's okay. I can do it. You like pepperoni, cheddar and mustard, right?"
She felt Luz nod her head against her shoulder and laughed, bringing four slices of bread out to begin the sandwich-making process.

It was a beautiful day, with the gleaming sun working hard to counteract the cool wind and the cover of the clouds and creating the perfect balance of temperature. Luz laid out their picnic blanket on the grass as Amity opened the basket full of food ("This is your first picnic! We need to do it right," Luz had insisted, her eyes sparkling, and Amity had given in because she knew it would be impossible to change her mind). The two of them sat down on the blanket and pulled out the sandwiches. Honestly, this was not what Amity had pictured when Luz mentioned having a blanket—she'd thought it would be soft and warm, like the ones they used when they were sleeping at her house, not this plastic-like texture. But she figured it probably had a reason for being like that, and it was comfortable enough.
She looked around at the park they had chosen. Trees lined the edges of the park, and more of them were scattered throughout the grass, interrupting the broad sunlight's reach with spots of cool shade. Amity and Luz were utilizing some of that shade, choosing it over the direct sunlight (although the sun in the human realm wasn't as hot as the sun in the Boiling Isles, Amity burned easily, and she did not want to deal with sunburn).
"How's Ed been recovering?" Luz asked, breaking the silence before taking a bite of her sandwich.
"He's doing...okay," Amity answered. "Even with healers helping, it's a slow process, and he is not very patient. He keeps trying to jump back into things and hurting himself again."
