Spoiler alert for s2ep21, King's Tide. Do not read unless you've watched the episode.

Night was falling on the city of Gravesfield, Connecticut. The sky, previously brilliant colours of orange and pink from the sunset, was now being washed over with a deep indigo, and stars were starting to become visible. The moon shone brightly, stretching its faint but beautiful light over every surface it could.

Sitting outside, taking in the night and all of its beauty, was a girl. She stared forlornly out into the distance, trying to organize her thoughts. Behind her, a brief beam of light revealed itself, then disappeared as a door opened and closed. A second girl moved to stand beside the first one. They sat in silence for a minute before the second girl spoke up.

"Luz," she asked tenderly, "are you okay? We've been looking for you everywhere."

Luz let out a small sigh. After a moment she replied, "Yeah, I'm okay. I just- needed to be by myself for a little bit."

"Okay." Another pause. "If you'd rather I leave-"

"No, no, it's okay, Amity. I'm just worried about getting back to the demon realm."

The witch didn't say anything, letting Luz vent. "We were struggling to make a working portal back at the Owl House, where we actually had some magical materials to work with. But now? We barely have anything that contains magic, least of all Titan's Blood." Her voice clogged up as tears sprung into her eyes. "And everyone else is there—Eda, King, the CATs, all of those poor witches and demons—who knows if they're even all still alive, and I can't help but feel like it's my fault for leaving them behind. That I should have stayed there to stop the Collector. That I didn't try hard enough to save them. And that makes me really...it makes me hate myself."

She was fully crying now, tears running down her face. Even in the dark, Amity could see her expression—sadness, anger, guilt. She gently grabbed Luz's shoulders and pulled her into a hug, allowing her to let her feelings out without interruption. Amity just hugged her close, rubbed her back, and occasionally mumbled supportive things like "let it out" or "it's okay" or "I'm here".

Once her tears had slowed, Amity gently pulled away and looked her girlfriend in the eye. "Luz, listen to me. I don't know what's going to happen with the portal, or how we're going to return there. But we will, okay? We won't stop trying, and we're going to go back and help the witches and demons there." She offered the human a small, kind smile.

"Second of all, it is not your fault that you left them behind. You got yourself to safety, which is what you needed to do. You shouldn't feel like you need to keep everything and everyone out of danger all the time. The people there can fight for themselves."

The witch cupped her cheek and tenderly wiped a tear away. "Luz, you're an amazing, kind, strong person. I know you sometimes feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but please remember: it doesn't always need to be you. It's okay to step back and let someone else handle things, okay?" She pressed a kiss to her forehead and gave her another sweet smile.

Luz was tearing up again. She'd never thought that she'd hear someone say those words to her. Hearing them was sweet and uplifting, and although it didn't vanish her fears and doubts completely, it relaxed her a bit knowing that Amity was right. She could step back for a bit and let someone on the Isles take the lead while she tried her best to make a working portal.

She nodded. "Thank you, Amity. I needed that."

Amity just smiled and took her hand, stroking it with her thumb. "Always."
