Four girls suddenly appeared in a room.
It was medium sized, not super big but not too small. The floor was covered with a light brown carpet, and the space was almost empty except for the lights on the ceiling and the four teenagers now standing in it.
One of the girls—with mint green hair and brown roots—noticed immediately and stood up, glaring at everyone else. Her gaze landed on one of the other girls with round ears and she scowled.
"Human," she snarled. "What did you do this time? Where are we? How do we get back?"
The girl looked surprised. "You think I'd know?"
A third teen, with short lavender hair, covered her mouth in shock. She glanced beside her at the fourth girl, who bore resemblance to the human.
"Luz," she whispered, "is that us?"
Luz nodded, awestruck. "I think so."
The human looked over at them, having heard her name. Her eyes lit up.
"Whoa," she said. "Who are you?"
The two shared a glance before Luz responded, "I think we're you from the future."
Luz from the past gasped. "Really?!" She exclaimed. "I have so many questions! Why is your hair different? Are you two on better terms? Right now, past you kind of hates me." She directed her last question towards the purple-haired girl, making her grimace. Present Luz put a hand over hers in comfort and they smiled at each other. Past Luz stared at them in awe.
"Amity," she called towards the mint-haired girl. "Look! We're friends in the future!"
As past Amity walked towards them, looking doubtful, present Luz buried her face in her hands in embarrassment. Amity snickered. "Told you," she teased.
"Ok, ok," present Luz mumbled, taking her pink face out of her hands. "It was bad."
Meanwhile, past Amity was looking at her future self with a strange expression. Suddenly she blurted, "Why is your hair like that? You know mo- they will kill you." She glanced self-consciously over at past Luz.
Purple-haired Amity exhaled. "I know," she said. "They were mad. But some things are more important than impressing them and keeping up your reputation." Here she smiled at her Luz fondly and got a hand squeeze in return.
Past Amity was looking at them in confusion. "What?" She challenged. "What could be more important than getting good grades and being perfect?"
"Friends," present Amity replied. "And...well, you'll see." She squeezed Luz's hand affectionately.
Past Luz was looking between them in bewilderment. "Who got mad? What reputation? Who's 'they'?"
"None of your business," past Amity snapped.
"Watch it," present Amity warned instinctively. "Don't snap at her like that."
The mint-haired girl closed her mouth, looking astonished. "So, what?" She asked after recovering herself. "Are you two friends now or something? You know what she's done, right?" She asked her future self. Beside her, past Luz huffed and gave her a glare.
Present Luz and Amity exchanged a look. They seemed to have a whole conversation with their eyes. Once they broke contact, they looked at the other two, their cheeks dusted with pink.
"Not exactly," Luz answered. "She's my girlfriend." She held up their intertwined hands as if to prove their point.
The other two's reactions were immediate and dramatic.
"What?!" Past Amity exclaimed. "But why- how did you even- I mean- HER?!"
"We're dating?" Luz asked, baffled.
"Yes," Amity confirmed proudly, "and she's mi batata." Luz laughed and kissed her cheek in response, making the witch's cheeks turn red. Their past selves watched this exchange as if they were aliens. Suddenly, Luz gasped.
"It's just like Hecate and Azura!" She said excitedly. "Enemies to friends to lovers!"
"Wait, you read Azura too?" Amity said.
"Yeah! You get them on the Boiling Isles? That is so cool! I can't believe you're an Azura fan!" Luz continued enthusiastically. The present Luz and Amity watched them with smiles on their faces, remembering the first time they found out they both loved Azura.
"What do you see in her anyway?" the green-haired witch asked snidely, changing the subject.
Amity smiled fondly. "Well, we both like the Good Witch Azura, as you just figured out. She's smart, kind, brave, and loyal. She'd do anything to protect her friends. She never gave up on me, even when I had given up on myself. Not to mention, she's gorgeous."
Present Luz's face looked very red and flustered. She buried it in her girlfriend's shoulder, letting out a muffled "Amity!"
Amity only giggled and rested her head on top of Luz's. "I'm only telling the truth, hermosa." Luz simply wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled her closer.
Past Luz felt her face warm up a bit as a result of her future girlfriend's compliments. This was new: no one had ever seen her that way before, to her knowledge. Seeing how happy she was with Amity touched her. Amity really saw her, every part of her, even her flaws, and loved her anyway.
Past Amity, on the other hand, was shocked. How could she date Luz, after everything she'd done to her? How could she fall for someone who constantly humiliated her? It almost felt like betrayal.
"She mortified you, and got you in trouble!" she cried, trying to reason with herself. "How can you still like her, after all of that?"
Amity's face turned serious. "She has good intentions," she explained, "even if her choices sometimes are questionable." Luz raised her head from her shoulder to glare at her. "Trust me. I promise she has a good heart. She would never, ever do anything like that on purpose."
"Actually," past Luz piped up, "I can tell you why I did what I did."
Amity raised an eyebrow but didn't object, so she continued. "Willow was tired of being picked on, and I really wanted to see what a magic school looked like. So, we made a deal. I would pretend to be her abomination for the day. She would get a better grade and I would be able to see your school from the inside."
Her gaze locked with her rivals', slightly nervous yet unwavering. "I was only trying to help. I never meant to drag you into it."
Amity's face softened ever so slightly. "Why did you want to see Hexside so badly?" She asked.
"Well, Eda was teaching me some spells, but I wanted to learn magic the more traditional way, like it's taught at Hexside. I really, really wanted to learn magic. I still do. I just wanted to see what it was like." Her gaze dropped to the floor.
The mint-haired girl sighed. "Alright," she said, somewhat hesitantly. "I won't bother you if you don't bother me. Just- don't pester me, human."
Luz's expression brightened. "Who, me? Don't worry. I'll stay out of your way." She saluted.
From a few steps away, their present selves stood, watching the scene play out.
"This is really weird," Amity murmured.
Luz nodded, her deep brown eyes glimmering. "I ship us," she whispered excitedly.
The witch laughed affectionately. "You dork."
