Luz groaned as she got out of bed, squinting. Everything looked dreary and blurry to her. She groaned.
"Ugh," she murmured, "I really shouldn't have stayed up that late working last night." Even after eating breakfast and getting ready, her brain was hazy, her movements were slow, and her vision wasn't much better than before.
I really don't want to spend the rest of the day like this.
She remembered she'd made a potion that could help her feel more awake, like magical coffee. "Where is it..." she mumbled, searching through her cupboard. Finally she found it: a rose pink potion in a small glass bottle. "Aha!" she exclaimed.
"Luz!" Eda called. "Come on, you're gonna be late."
"Coming!" she replied, hastily stuffing it in her bag before leaving.
Her first chance to use the potion came when she was in front of the school. She took a sip and waited for it to take effect.
Nothing seemed to be happening; her senses were still just as fuzzy as before. Maybe I just didn't take enough. She drank more in bigger gulps, leaving around a third of the potion left. Still nothing.
Luz grunted and put it back in her bag. She must've brewed it wrong. What a pain. Now she'd have to redo it.
She walked to her locker and opened it, her sleepy eyes refusing to focus on anything but getting the task done.
"Luz!"
She turned towards the person calling her name: Amity. Their eyes met as she walked towards her, and Luz couldn't help but grin when she saw her. Her heart was flipping as if it was an excited dolphin.
"Hey, Amity!" she greeted, her voice cheerful.
The witch smiled, and Luz felt like she was melting into the floor. Another part of her brain was asking why everything seemed even more hazy now, but she didn't pay much attention to it, too captivated by Amity. Her eyes hungrily took in all the little details: how soft her green hair looked, her friendly and open yellow eyes, the graceful way her lips moved as she talked.
Oh, shoot. She was talking. And Luz hadn't been listening.
She quickly tuned in to hear her say, "-really frustrating sometimes."
A second of silence passed, and Luz started to panic. She's expecting me to say something, but I have no idea what she just said. It's okay, Luz. Just be chill.
"Oh, yeah! Totally! The most frustrating!" she agreed, adding a nervous laugh to the end just for the grand cherry on top of her awkward ramble cake.
Amity tilted her head. "Luz, are you okay? You're acting a little weird."
Luz closed her locker and tried to do finger guns while holding a couple of books. It did not work very well. "Haha, yep, totally fine! Anyways, I'm gonna go now, sorry, see you later, bye!" She hurried away, her face hot and her mind shouting at her.
Really, Luz? Finger guns when your hands were full? She's going to think you're an idiot!
Why did I have to start rambling?!
She sat down at a desk in her class and put up an arm, resting her head on it. Immediately, her eyes started to close, craving the peace of darkness, and for a moment she let them.
Then the teacher called for the students' attention and she dragged her eyes open, forcing them back into the bright outside world.
