"Eda!" Luz called, kicking the door to the Owl House open and ignoring Hooty's protests. "Emergency!"
The owl lady appeared in the living room, frowning. "What is it, kid? And why are you holding a cat?" She glanced pointedly at the European Shorthair cat she held. It had slick brown fur and amber eyes, and it looked quite content to be in Luz's arms.
"That's the emergency!" The human said frantically. "Amity got turned into a cat!"
Eda snorted. "Well, that is something you don't hear every day."
"Eda!"
"Right, sorry. How did this happen?"
"Well," Luz recalled, "in potions class, we were supposed to make a brew that made you act like a certain animal. At lunch I was emptying out my bag, and I guess she mistook it for juice or something and drank it." At this point, the cat gave a defensive sounding meow, which probably translated into something like "How was I supposed to know?"
"Wait," Eda interrupted. "Wasn't the potion supposed to make her act like an animal instead of turning into one?"
"I'm still not super good at potions yet," Luz explained sheepishly. "I think I added the wrong amount of goblin blood." She thought for a moment, then a paw swipe from Amity snapped her out of her thoughts. "Can you help me, please?"
Eda studied the cat thoughtfully for a moment before shaking her head. "Sorry, kiddo. You'll have to wait for this to wear off on its own."
"What?" Luz exclaimed as Amity growled. "How long will it take?"
Her mentor shrugged. "It'll probably last around twenty-four hours. When did she drink it?"
"Around twelve thirty, I think," Luz responded. Amity gave a little nod of confirmation.
"There you have it. She'll probably stay a cat until twelve thirty tomorrow afternoon. Until then, you two have some waiting to do."

The two girls agreed that it would be better if Amity stayed overnight at the Owl House. That way, Eda and Luz could keep an eye on her, and the Blights wouldn't have to witness her situation. Her parents would be disappointed; the twins would never let her live it down.
After sending a message to her parents from Amity's scroll telling them where she was, Luz let herself fall back onto her makeshift bed on the floor. "So, what do you wanna do?" She asked.
Amity flicked her tail in response. She was trying to resist the urge to pad over and lay down on Luz's stomach, falling asleep to the rise and fall of her chest. She pondered for a moment, then partially gave in to it and lay down next to her, kneading the blankets before settling.
Luz, of course, found this extremely adorable. She hesitated, then placed a hand on the cat's head, moving it down her back in a gentle motion.
Amity froze before melting into the human's touch. She let herself relax and be in the moment. She was so relaxed, in fact, that soon a soft rumbling noise came from her throat, slowly becoming louder with each new pet she was given.
Luz had to suppress a squeal. OH MY TITAN, she thought. She's PURRING.
Her fingers moved underneath Amity's neck, where she gave a gentle scratch. The purring became louder as she leaned into the calming sensation. Amity had never felt so relaxed in her life. No wonder cats are always so sleepy.
Eventually Luz said ruefully, "We should probably work on homework now."
The cat gave a reluctant meow, not wanting to leave but knowing that they should. She got up, stretched, and trotted over to the open chest in Luz's makeshift bedroom with her clothes in it. She daintily hopped into it and lay down again, her sleepiness taking over once more.
Luz giggled at her antics. "I guess there's not much you can do as a cat, is there?" Amity shook her head without opening her eyes.
The human let her gaze linger on Amity a little longer. Even as a cat she was super cute, her chest gently rising and falling as she slept. She looked so peaceful.
Luz shook her head. She's a cat, Luz, she scolded herself. She re-focused herself on her homework.
A few hours later, Luz yawned and pressed the button on her phone to check the time. It's 10 already?!
She glanced over at the sleeping cat. "How about we call it a day, Amity?"
The amber-eyed girl groggily opened her eyes and nodded. She got up and walked over to sit by the girl's side, looking up at her.
Luz felt her heart start to beat faster and slowed her breaths to calm it. She's a cat, she reminded herself. Just a cat. Not the girl I have a crush on.
The two of them got ready for bed (well, Luz got ready for bed—all Amity needed to do was groom herself) and snuggled under the covers. Luz fell asleep to the rhythmic sound of the cat's purring and the soft sensation of her fur under her fingers.

The next morning, the two girls decided to read Good Witch Azura book 3, with Luz reading it aloud to Amity, who was sitting on her lap. Time flew by and, before they knew it, afternoon arrived. After a quick lunch, they went back to reading, in the same position. Neither of them noticed as the minutes ticked by and, soon enough, 12:30 arrived.
"Azura," Luz read. "We- aaAAUGH!"
She cut herself off as Amity transformed back: slowly morphing and growing until she was fully a witch again. Who was still sitting in Luz's lap.
She was sprawled out across the human girl's lap, with her legs bent and her arms pulled in close to her chest—like a cat's arms would be. When she changed back and processed where she was, her face turned red and she jumped, startled, causing her to fall off the couch.
"Oh! Sorry, Amity," Luz said, sitting up and offering the fallen girl her hand. Amity took it and pulled herself up into a sitting position. She pulled away quickly, but both of their hands still buzzed with the lingering feeling of the other's touch.
Luz was the one to break their silence. "So it looks like Eda was right then, huh?" Amity just nodded, not trusting herself with the power of speech.
"What was I right about?" The owl lady interjected, stepping into the room. Seeing the mint-haired girl again, she grinned. "Ah, Boots is back. Well, you can stay for however long you want, but I have a feeling your parents might want you back. The Blights are not known for being lenient."
Amity nodded. "I'll go back in a bit. But before that, would you like to finish the chapter?" She asked the other girl, somewhat shyly.
Luz beamed. "Of course! Do you want to be Hecate again?"
Eda smiled as she stepped out of the living room. She noticed how happy her apprentice seemed around the witch, and the latter girl's flustered acts. She hoped they could find a happy ending like those fictional characters they both loved.
