"Mija!"Luz's eyes snapped open and she sat up, expecting to see the interior of her bedroom at the Owl House. Instead, she was greeted by her old room in the human realm.
What...?
Her heart sank as she remembered the previous day's events. Finally opening a successful portal. Saying goodbye to all of the wonderful people she'd met: Eda. King. Hooty. Willow. Gus. Amity. Lilith. All of them had helped her and accepted her in the crazy realm she'd stumbled into. All of them had played a part in making her feel welcome, and she'd bonded with all of them.
And then she had to say goodbye to them forever.
She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes, which were rapidly filling with tears. Her heart stung, knowing that she'd left everyone there with no intention of ever returning.
Not that she didn't want to. She did want to, desperately. She wanted to run right back to that old, run-down house and go back through the portal and hug and hug and hug everyone until they forgot she ever left. She wanted to be eating a griffin egg for breakfast with King munching happily away beside her and Eda. She wanted to be back at Hexside, laughing with Willow and Gus and Amity and learning about magic.
But it was impossible. She had no way of communicating with anyone there, so how would she know if they opened a portal? How could she ever go back?
The answer? She couldn't. Thinking it shredded her heart into a million pieces, but as much as it hurt to admit, it was true. She would never be able to go back there.
Now it was impossible to stop the tears that escaped her eyes. She would never be able to see them again. She would never be able to see Eda's harpy form, or make bread puns with King, or get annoyed at Hooty for talking too much. She wouldn't be able to see Willow's Flyer Derby skills, or Gus's witty illusions, or Amity's daring intelligence. Never again. They were all gone.
At this point, it seemed like she could fill a pool with her endless stream of tears. She wanted to be sad for a moment, to grieve, so she let the thoughts come.
Thoughts of how she'd never see them again, and her joyful memories at the Boiling Isles, and how it was the only place she was really happy. She let them come and take over her until she was drowning in them. New memories and epiphanies kept hitting her, fresh waves that only pushed her deeper under. She gasped for air, feeling it being swept out from her lungs.
A knock at the door forcefully brought her back to reality. "Luz? ¿Estás bien?" Her mom's voice asked worriedly. (Are you okay?)
Luz took a breath, hoping to steady her voice. She wiped her eyes and put on a fake smile. "Si mamá. I'm fine."
Her mom didn't answer for a moment, and Luz clutched her stomach nervously. Was I too perky? She didn't notice anything, did she?
Camila paused for a moment, leaving Luz holding her breath. Finally she said, "Okay. Meet me downstairs when you're ready."
As her mother walked away, Luz let out her breath. Her peripheral vision caught a picture lying on the ground. She picked it up and smiled.
It was the picture that was taken on the night of Grom. They were all in their outfits. Gus was rocking out with his microphone, Willow was posing in her green dress, and Luz was pulling Amity into the frame.
Her eyes got glossy as she remembered that unforgetful night. It was an experience she'd never forget. Grom night makes Prom seem super lame.
Next, her thoughts wandered to Amity. Their dance that night, and just how blind she'd been. And then Amity asked her out, and all of the doubt and fretfulness were replaced with pure joy. It had been like that for the next few months, too. They'd had their ups and downs, like all relationships, but most of it had just been the euphoria of dating the girl she had liked for so long.
After she was forced to return home again, they decided to call it off. They weren't officially dating anymore—over the distance that separated them, it would have been way too difficult to pull off. So they weren't just friends, but they weren't girlfriends anymore, either. They both acknowledged that their feelings were still there. They just weren't officially a couple anymore.
And that broke her heart, too. Amity was her first partner that had really listened and cared about her. She loved her for who she was, weirdness and all. And Luz loved her back.
She stood up and kicked a pillow into the wall, tears brimming in her eyes again. She already missed everyone so much, and it had only been a day since she'd left. She wished she could talk to Eda. Or her friends. Or cuddle with King on the couch until she felt better. But here, in the human realm, there was nothing except her mom and fanfiction to distract from her homesickness.
Luz blinked, processing the word she'd just used. Homesickness. She thought it was bad when she was missing her mom in the Boiling Isles, but now that she was here, it was much worse. She realized that she felt more at home in a completely different realm than in her own.
The Boiling Isles has become my home.
Fighting back more tears, Luz fixed her face and went downstairs to meet her mom.
