Enchanted

Amity was being dragged to another one of her parents' stupid, formal parties. She shifted uncomfortably as a random boy she didn't know droned on and on about his father's successful business.

There I was again tonight. Forcing laughter, faking smiles.

She scanned the room and sighed. She wished there was someone she could talk to who wasn't rich and snobby and full of themselves. She wished she could talk to someone interesting, someone actually worth listening to.

Same old tired, lonely place.

She quickly excused herself from the boy's presence and walked towards the refreshments table, where she hoped she would get at least a little bit of time to herself.

Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy. Vanished when I saw your face.

Amity glanced up at the crowd again. Her gaze caught on a girl with warm brown skin and short chocolate hair.

All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you.

The girl looked up and met her eyes, grinning from something someone else had said. Her eyes, too, were brown: they sparkled and danced in the pale pink lighting of the party.

Your eyes whispered "have we met?" 'Cross the room, your silhouette starts to make its way to me.

The girl walked over to her. "Hello," she greeted cheerfully. "I'm Luz Noceda. What's your name?"

"Amity Blight," she responded, holding out her hand. Luz took it and they shook.

"Wow. I didn't know I'd be meeting one of the most important people at this party tonight," Luz remarked.

"Being 'important' mostly means attending a lot of boring parties," Amity said with a shrug. "And I've heard about you, too. My parents mostly talk about you as an example of what not to do, and anyone who annoys my parents is someone I'd be happy to know."

Luz smirked. "Ooh, Blight's a daredevil."

Amity grinned back at her. "I try."

The playful conversation starts, counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy.

And it was enchanting to meet you.
