Amity paced around her room with her scroll to her ear, irate. "Mom, I'm doing just fine on my own! No, you- you can't make me join a coven. I don't want to join one anymore! I haven't for a long time!"
Her face twisted coldly at Odalia's words. "This has nothing to do with Luz. Leave her out of this." Another short pause.
"No, she's not a bad influence! She's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I don't care whether or not you think she's suitable. I love her, and nothing or no one, including you, can change that."
Her face grew colder and angrier by the second. "If you're seriously more willing to believe that I was brainwashed rather than accept that I've changed, then I am not willing to talk to you. Not until you wake up and realize that my happiness matters more than your precious family reputation. Oh, and I'm not going to be a Blight anymore by October, by the way."
With that she hung up, drawing a circle in the air to make it disappear. Her so-called mother was trying to get Amity under her control again, even though she was an adult now and was fully capable of making her own decisions. Such as marrying her girlfriend of thirteen years and moving in with her, and not joining a coven against Odalia's wishes.
But Amity didn't care. It was her life, and her "mother" had spent too long puppeting her and controlling her. She was going to make her own choices, and live the way she wanted to. And if that meant that Odalia wouldn't be invited to her wedding, so be it!
Amity could still feel herself stressing out, though. Calls with her mother never ended well. She didn't know why she kept answering them. Usually Odalia only called to check up on Amity and berate her once again, but some part of the witch got worried whenever she saw Odalia's name pop up on the screen. Like, what if her father had passed away? What if Blight Mansion had been set on fire? She got anxious that Odalia might actually be calling about something important, only to get lectured about her lifestyle choices when she picked up.
Frustrated and feeling the need to occupy her hands, Amity wandered downstairs to the kitchen and subconsciously pulled out the ingredients for caterworm cupcakes. She got to work, mixing and stirring. It was soothing, and she let her mind wander while her hands steadily worked.
She ended up making two batches of cupcakes before moving on to brownies, then cookies, then a couple of fairy pies. She had no idea how long she'd been baking by the time Luz opened and closed the door.
"Hey, Ami- whoa! It smells good in here," she remarked, her voice getting louder as she walked closer to the kitchen. "Are you baking again?"
"Yeah," Amity admitted.
The human walked in and gaped. Flour covered the counters, there were measuring cups and spoons and bowls everywhere, and on the dining room table, cooling racks filled with cupcakes, cookies and pies were spread across the surface.
"Mi amor, are you okay? I know you like to bake when you're stressed," Luz asked once she'd gotten her power of speech back.
Amity sighed. "I got a call from Odalia earlier. The same old stuff happened. Y'know, she tried to convince me that I should join a coven, leave our life together behind, and come work at Blight Industries. She even went so far as to say that you brainwashed me." She huffed, the conversation from that morning swirling in her mind.
Luz grit her teeth. "That nerve of a woman!" She softened as she looked at her fiancé. "Aw, I'm sorry, batata." She walked over to Amity and put a caring arm around her.
The witch laid her head on Luz's shoulder defeatedly. "It just made me mad. And anxious." She gestured to the confections on the table. "So I did this to calm myself down."
"Did it work?" Luz asked.
Amity thought. It had definitely given her something to occupy herself with, and in doing so, it also made her anger and nerves settle down.
"Yeah," she answered, smiling up at Luz, "it did."
Luz kissed her forehead. "That's good. I'm glad you're feeling better now." Her chocolate eyes searched her face to confirm that what she'd said was true. Amity nodded, smiling a bit.
"I am." Her eyes travelled around the cluttered kitchen. "We should probably clean this up."
"Yeah. This is really messy," Luz agreed, putting the flour back in the pantry.
As they cleaned, Amity grinned sheepishly at her girlfriend. "I hope you're hungry for sweets."
Luz grinned at her. "Always. My sweet tooth is never satisfied."
