A/N: This oneshot contains spoilers for King's Tide.

Luz sat in front of her computer, trying to do homework. She kept trying to refocus her brain, but it kept disobeying her, speeding off in different directions. Well, mainly just one, actually: the events of six days ago, ringing clear in her mind and replaying over and over, like a broken record that haunted her. Along with those memories came a wave of overwhelming grief, anger, and longing.

Feeling tears start to prick her eyes again, Luz ditched her homework and went over to the keyboard she had. It was particularly helpful right now, as it helped her cope, and gave her an escape, a distraction, and a way to vent at the same time.

She went through songs to play in her head, rejecting most of them. No, not in the mood, too cheerful, no, too slow-paced, no... Then an idea popped into her head and she grabbed her laptop again to pull up the music for it.

Taking a shaky breath in, she put her hands on the keys and started to play.

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.

We've come a long way from where we began

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again.

A lump formed in her throat, closing over the words she was trying to sing and cutting off the note early. Luz remembered. She remembered building a portal with her mom, her friends and Vee after months of hard work. She remembered her mom's whisper to her as she stepped through the door, holding her hands delicately as if afraid she would blow away: "Take care, mija. Come back soon."

She kept playing.

Why'd you have to leave so soon?

Why'd you have to go?

Why'd you have to leave me when I needed you the most?

Cause I don't really know how to tell ya

Without feeling much worse

I know you're in a better place

But it's always gonna hurt.

Carry on

Give me all the strength I need to carry on.

A shaky intake of air, her voice wobbling with emotion. More memories came back to her, hitting her with such force that it felt like she'd been winded.

They'd finished Belos off for good and dealt with the Collector. They'd been so happy. She had been so happy, to finally have everything she wanted: no more evil bad guys or horrible systems. Just her and her friends, together again with no boulders to carry.

Except one.

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.

We've come a long way from where we began

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again

A tear escaped her eye, running down her cheek. She didn't stop to wipe it, just let her fingers play while her mind raced from one moment to the next.

Talking with her friends. Re-opening the portal and discovering it barely had any Titan's Blood left. Her mom telling her that she had to stay and her friends had to return to their realm. Her finally breaking down and admitting everything to them, and all of them giving her a hug. None of their faces were dry.

How do I breathe without ya?

Feeling so cold

I'll be waiting right here for ya

Till the day you're home.

The tears. The hugs. The goodbyes. The faces of everyone—Eda, King, Hooty, Lilith, Willow, Gus, Hunter, Amity. All of them were there, and she'd rather have burned her Azura books than left them in another realm with no way to contact them.

But she did. She ripped her eyes away from them, giving them one last tear-filled smile, and stepped through the door, hearing it close firmly and decisively behind her.

Carry on

Give me all the strength I need

To carry on

And ever since that day, six days ago, nothing has been okay. Her emotions have been up and down, never staying level. Anything could trigger her and make her start crying again. At this point, she was so sick of crying. What good would it do anyways?

So let the light guide your way

Hold every memory as you go.

She just felt broken. Broken and numb to the world, like a wild tornado that had nothing left to lose.

And every road you take will always lead you home, home.

God, she wished that were true. She couldn't imagine never seeing everyone on the Boiling Isles again.

It's been a long day without you, my friend

And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.

Honestly, she'd even be happy to see Boscha again.

We've come a long way from where we began

Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

When I see you again

Luz let tears flow freely from her eyes. She put all of her feelings into that note, all of her hurt and grief and lost hope.

When I see you again

See you again yeah yeah

When I see you again.

The song ended and Luz managed to flop onto her bed, hug a pillow to her chest, curl into herself, and sob.
