When Luz woke up on Bilentine's Day, her first thought was that she was tired.

Then she checked her phone, remembered what day it was, and suddenly felt much more awake.

"Okay, Luz," she said to herself. "This is it! Today's the day I'll finally confess to Amity!" She paused. "I really hope it goes well."

"Hey, kid!" Eda's voice called from downstairs. "Are you awake?"

"Uh, yeah! Coming!" She hurried downstairs.

She couldn't remember much from that morning. It seemed to flash by, with her repeating the actions of her routine mindlessly like a robot. Or a zombie, or someone who had been possessed- okay, I think that's enough examples.

Anyway, she got to school with the final note in her hand so it wouldn't get wrinkled. Except instead she'd gotten it damp because she was sweating and holding things in your hands for too long makes them sweaty for some Titanforsaken reason- aaaand now she was rambling. Yeesh, she really was a mess today.

She was casually walking to Amity's locker to put her note in there when she heard a familiar voice call, "Hey, Luz!"

Luz tensed, turning around and hiding the note behind her back. "Amity!" she greeted, an awkward smile on her face. "Hey!"

Amity returned the grin, looking confused. "Why were you at my locker?" she asked curiously.

Luz's heart jumped, and not in a good way. This girl was going to be the death of her. But she should tell the truth, right? This was what she'd planned all along.

She looked into Amity's eyes—Titan, her eyes were pretty. They looked like shimmering pools of sunshine, bright and comforting.

"Luz?" Amity said, light pink shading her cheeks.

"Right! I just wanted to tell you that..." her eyes darted to the side and she took a deep breath before blurting, "um, t-tell you good morning! Yeah. I wanted to say good morning, and now I have, so, bye!" She hurried away, keeping her eyes down. She didn't look back over at Amity, and she missed the witch's glance towards her, then to her locker, where a pink piece of folded paper should have been.

As soon as Luz got far enough away, she groaned and slid down to the floor with her knees to her chest. "'Tell you good morning'? Aaargh, come on, Luz. You'll never be able to ask her if you panic! I just have to go back to her, and tell her that- no, she's already seen me walk off! If I go back, she'll be weirded out!" She sighed, burying her face in her knees and closing her eyes. Frustration and embarrassment swirled around inside her like a dark potion of negativity.

"Who'll be weirded out?"

Luz's head shot up at the voice. Her heart dropped to her stomach as Amity stepped into view.

"Oh, don't worry. It's not that important," she tried to wave it off, flicking her hand nonchalantly.

Amity didn't look impressed. "If it isn't important, why do you look so worked up? You're worse than Mit- um, I mean, you're worse than me when I'm upset." Her face turned an impressive shade of red, as if to demonstrate.

Luz squinted. Something was wrong. This wasn't the Amity she knew. "What's going on? Who are you?" she asked, pulling out a few glyphs for good measure.

Suddenly she heard voices coming from the door. "Dangit, Ed! You gave us away!"

"I'm sorry, I thought I had it!"

She walked over to the door and, sure enough, Edric and Emira were standing there, with a light blue circle glowing around Ed's finger.

"Guys? What are you doing here? And why did you pretend to be Amity?" Luz asked, pocketing her glyphs.
