"I'm nervous," Amity confided. "What if I make a bad first impression? What if she doesn't like me?"

Luz put a hand on her shoulder for comfort. "Trust me, she'll love you. And besides, our first impressions weren't good either, and look where we are now!"

The witch let a smile cross her face, washing away her previous worried frown. "True." She took a deep breath and straightened her posture, putting on a confident front.

"All right," she said, sharing a glance with her girlfriend. "Let's do this."

Luz pressed the doorbell, and it emitted a small ding. A moment later, they heard faint footsteps from the other side of the door. It opened to reveal a middle-aged woman.

She had dark brown hair that was just about level with her chin. Like her daughter, she had round human ears, smooth brown skin and eyes the color of cocoa beans that were partially concealed by pointy red glasses.

When she saw Luz, her face lit up. "Luz, you're back!"

"Hi, mama!" Luz replied, and the two of them hugged.

"Oh!" Camila said after they pulled back. Her cocoa eyes were trained right on Amity "Luz, who is this? Is this the girl you keep talking about?"

Luz blushed, her skin painted over with a light pink hue. "Yeah! This is Amity, my girlfriend."

Amity braced herself for some sort of remark about how she was a witch and couldn't date her daughter, something Odalia would no doubt have pounced on. Still, she forced herself to remain civil. "Hi, Ms. Noceda. I-it's so nice to meet you."

Camila shot her a warm smile in return. "Hello, Amity. I'm so glad I finally get to meet my daughter's girlfriend! Come in, come in." She opened the door wider for them to enter through.

As Amity awkwardly stepped inside, Luz gave her an encouraging grin. "I told you she'd like you!" she whispered.

"So how long have you two been together?" Camila asked once they were all seated on the couch.

"A few months," Luz answered, glancing at her girlfriend. Amity was smiling politely, but Luz could tell that she was just covering up her nerves.

"And what about you, Amity?" Camila said, turning towards the witch. "How did your family react?"

Amity deflated a bit. "Oh, um, my siblings were supportive, and my dad. But my mom doesn't like it as much."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Camila said. "Is she homophobic?"

Amity tilted her head, confused. "Um, pardon?"

"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you!" Luz interjected. "From what I've seen, homophobia doesn't exist there. It's just a normal thing."

"Really? Wow," Camila said. "I wish our world was like that."

Silence settled over the group for a moment. It was a little unnerving to Amity, and she felt like she had to fill it with something. She racked her brain, trying to think of something to say.

"You have a nice house," she said.

"Thank you," Camila replied. There was another brief silence before she followed up with, "so how did you two meet?"

Amity froze, her eyes slowly sliding over to meet Luz's. Her girlfriend looked just as awkward as she did. How do you tell your girlfriend's mom that you used to hate each other? And you fought her and yelled at her and insulted her and her friends?

"We met at school," Luz started.

"We, uh," Amity stuttered. She didn't want Camila to think of her as a bad person, but she also didn't want to lie. "We...didn't really like each other at first."

"Yeah," Luz agreed sheepishly. "We kinda went through a whole rivals-to-friends-to-lovers arc."

"I did and said things I can't take back," Amity admitted, staring down at her hands in her lap. "All I can do to make up for it is to try to be a better person now."

"You are a better person!" Luz assured her, putting a comforting arm around her shoulder. "Besides, you know Willow and I already forgave you."

Amity looked up at her and couldn't stop the smile that crossed her face. "I know."

Their moment was interrupted by soft sniffles. They both looked over and saw Camila grinning through the tears in her eyes.

"Mom, are you okay?" Luz asked worriedly.

"I'm fine, mija," she responded. "I am just so glad that my daughter found such a wonderful and caring girlfriend."

Amity froze and then smiled, trying to stay calm and collected. But inside, she was overcome with relief and gratefulness. Luz was right; Camila was super nice, and it turned out she'd had nothing to worry about after all.

    "Mom!" Luz complained, smiling.

"I know, I know. I'm making it emotional." Camila stood up and smiled at them both. "Well, I have to leave for work, but it was very nice to meet you, Amity."

"Yeah, you too," Amity mumbled, willing the tears threatening to spill out of her eyes to go away.
After she left, Luz turned to her. "That wasn't so bad, right?" she grinned.

Amity blinked away her tears and smiled back. "Yeah," she agreed. "It wasn't so bad after all."
