"Amity?"
The lilac-haired witch looked up at her. "Hmm?"
Luz could feel heat rushing to her cheeks, but she had to ask. "Um, do you mind putting on some music so we can maybe dance? Y'know, like at Grom?"
Amity looked around the cramped space they were in. Her little study room in the library probably wasn't the best space to dance in, but she could make it work.
At her silence, Luz immediately assumed the worst. "Or we don't have to if you don't want to. Sorry if it would make you uncomfortable, I just- gah, that was probably really cheesy-sounding."
"No, no, it's okay," Amity assured her. "That actually sounds like a nice idea."
She summoned her scroll and opened the music app, quickly pulling up some slow dance music. The two girls awkwardly walked towards each other with the intent of dancing, but not knowing how to start. They both laughed.
"How about I..." Luz gestured vaguely to her girlfriend's waist. Amity nodded, flushing slightly.
They got into the proper dancing position and started to sway to the rhythm of the music. Luz let a sense of peace wash over her as she looked into Amity's golden eyes.
Her mind drifted to the fanfictions she'd read, and how she was unintentionally copying them. Slow dancing in a private, romantic setting and staring into her girlfriend's eyes? She might as well actually be in a fanfic at this point!
This train of thought led her to a popular term used in fanfics, and the question she's always had about it. She decided to voice it.
"Amity?" She whispered, not wanting to wreck the moment they were sharing.
"Yes?"
"I was just wondering...I've read about couples running their hands through each other's hair before, but wouldn't they run into tangles and tug on the other person's hair?"
The witch giggled. "If you dig your fingers into their scalp, sure. But not if you do it like this." She glided her fingers gently over Luz's hair, and she felt herself melt into the touch.
Authors always made the action sound passionate. They never described how relaxing it was, and how it somehow made her heart feel even fuller, like it could take off and float into space at any moment.
The human stared into those eyes, and marveled at how much Amity had changed. When they first met, she never would've thought that they'd be in this situation, and how gentle and caring she could be. Especially considering that the first time they met was when Amity was shaking her, yelling at her about who she really was and wanting answers.
Noticing her stare, Amity smiled in confusion. "What?"
"I just-" Luz waved her hands around, trying to find the right words to express how she felt. "You've changed so much since June, and I really-" love you, love you, love you, her head chanted. "-like you," she finished, internally kicking herself.
Amity's face lit up like the moon beaming its rays onto a clear night. "I really like you too, Luz," she replied, and her expression was so open and loving that Luz just wanted to pinch her cheeks and squish her face and hug her until she lost her breath because HOW COULD A GIRL BE THIS PRECIOUS?!
Luz decided to go with the last option. She wrapped her arms around her girlfriend and held her tight, not ever wanting to let go. "Thank you," she mumbled into her shoulder.
Amity's smile was audible in her voice. "For what?"
"Everything."
