Luz filled her lungs with air and blew into her trumpet. It exhaled a final, decisive high-pitched note to end the song she was playing. She lowered her instrument to her side and bowed dramatically.
"Very nice," her one-on-one teacher, Mr. Katz, praised. "I believe you've improved from last week's lesson. Now let's pack up, shall we? We're overtime."
She nodded and gave him finger guns as she put her trumpet back in her case. "See ya next week, Mr. Katz!" And with that she took off, her case swinging haphazardly beside her as she ran.
Her teacher sighed as he watched her sprint away through the halls. "What am I going to do with her?"
Luz scurried away from her classroom and towards the main entrance to the school. She still had a bit to run; she was currently a level above the main door, and she needed to go down the stairs.
She made her movements on the stairs quick. Usually she would do a sort of skip-walk, but today she was in a rush to get home. She'd stayed after school, as was usual on Tuesdays, to attend her solo trumpet lesson. However, today her mom had told her that they were having a family get-together, and she'd already run a few minutes late practicing. She knew this was important to her mom, and she didn't want to let her down.
In fact, she was so focused on getting home in time that she bumped into someone just as she was finishing her descent to the main level of the school.
Her school, Rocky Hill High School, didn't have too much space to spare. The hallways and staircases were very narrow, and they could get very crowded in between classes. This particular staircase had a wall separating the stairs from the more open part of the school. This meant that if someone was trying to use that staircase, and another person was exiting it, there was a very good chance that they would run into each other.
Unfortunately, this exact thing happened to Luz when she was running down the stairs.
To be fair, she was practically zooming down the steps, and there was no way for the other person to have seen her coming, or vice versa. But she still groaned when she and her trumpet ended up on the floor. Of course, of all days, today had to be the day where she didn't pay close enough attention and bumped into someone by accident. She looked up at the person she ran into and felt her stomach drop even more.
She had run into Amity Blight.
Amity was one of the popular girls at school. She was known for always getting straight A's, especially in science class, and hanging out with Boscha and her posse. She was smart, but she was also grumpy and pretty mean. She bullied several other students in her grade, and she was sassy as well. She was not someone to be trifled with.
Long story short, Luz had run into the wrong person.
"Watch it, nitwit!" Amity snapped at her, collecting the books and papers she'd dropped when they collided.
"I'm sorry!" Luz apologized. "I totally didn't mean to. I was just running too fast and I wasn't paying enough attention as I should've been."
The top student huffed as she stood up, books clutched to her chest. "You should be."
Luz glared at her, but she didn't have time to speak up. She had to go, NOW.
She quickly stood up and continued hurrying away, feeling Amity's eyes follow her as she fled. She'd have to deal with that later, but right now all that mattered was getting to that family dinner on time. Her mother was strict when it came to gatherings like this, and she didn't want that on her plate right now too, on top of everything else.
It was bad enough that out of everyone she could've run into, it had been Amity Blight. That was just her luck, but it was fine. She'd deal with it the next day at school if Amity decided to confront her.
Which, knowing her, would only be in a matter of time.

Luz shoved her books in her locker and sighed. Yesterday's reunion had been okay—she'd gotten a brief comment about her timing, but that was about it—but after the reunion, she'd been tired and needed some downtime. So she decided to start reading a new fanfic on Wattpad. No harm done, right?
Wrong. She'd ended up reading until 3 am, then having to get up at 6 am. She couldn't help it! She was reading a Hecazura fic, and she was so engaged that she just didn't want to put it down. Because of this, she'd gotten three hours of sleep. Hooray for reader sleep schedules.
She was tired and questioning her life decisions when Amity's clique approached her.
"Hey!" The green-haired girl snapped. Luz looked up at her. Yep, I predicted the future. Of course she's going to talk to me about what happened yesterday.
"Why did you bump into me yesterday?" Amity demanded. "And then you just got up and left!"
"Oh! Yeah," Luz said. "Sorry about that. I was in a rush, so I didn't stick around. And you know how that stairwell is, you can never see if anyone's rounding the corner, haha."
A girl with dark skin and silvery hair whispered to another girl with pink hair, and they both snickered. If she remembered right, their names were Skara and Boscha. They were Amity's friends, and could usually be seen around her, gossiping or picking on people.
Amity, however, scoffed. "Yeah, well, you should've thought about that before you bumped into me." Before Luz could protest that, really, the only thoughts in her head at the time were about being late, they waltzed away.
"Hmph." She pouted as she closed her locker and leaned against it. She could appeal to Amity. She knew she could.
If only she didn't make it so difficult.
A/N: The grumpet AU is a silly AU that my sister came up with. Basically, one of the people in the ship plays the trumpet, and the other one is grumpy. Hope you enjoyed!
P.S. If it's late at night for you, go to sleep please! Don't be like Luz.
