Luz twirled her pencil in her fingers and stared at her desk. More specifically, the fairy pie on her desk from Amity. She hadn't eaten it out of guilt for the fairies and weirded-outness because those were actually real live fairies and it sort of creeped her out. Maybe she'd give it to King later. That little gremlin was always hungry.
She still appreciated the effort that must have gone into the pie, though, even if she wouldn't eat it. And it was such a sweet thing to do, too (pun intended). Maybe she should make something else as a thank-you to Amity!
Luz scooped up the pie, gave it to the little demon (who happily gobbled it up in two bites) and went straight for the kitchen, where she started rummaging for the proper ingredients.
"What're you up to, kid?" Eda asked, appearing in the doorway and watching as the teen frantically searched through all of the cupboards and drawers.
"I'm looking for ingredients to make cookies for Amity...no, not in here..." Luz answered, sticking her head into a large cupboard.
Eda snorted. "Oh, Boots? Why? You got some big confession to make or something?"
Luz felt heat rise to her cheeks at the implication in her mentor's question. She willed them to cool down as she responded, "Uh- n-no! I just- she made me a fairy pie, so I wanted to give her some cookies to thank her."
The witch snorted again. "Yeah, sure, kid. Here, I can help with some of the ingredient-finding." She took out all of the baking materials needed. "There," she announced. "And don't let yourself get too worked up over this. Whatever happens, happens."
Luz smiled. "Alright," she said. "Thanks, Eda."
Eda ruffled her hair as she made her way out of the kitchen. "No problem, kiddo."
Baking in the Boiling Isles was a bit different from baking in the human realm. For one thing, most of the recipes were unfamiliar to her (not to mention really gross-sounding), so she had to go by instinct and memory. And for another, the ingredients were different too, and they had different tastes and proportions to take into account.
Needless to say, the first batch of cookies tasted horrible. She tried again, and this time they were much better but still weren't quite there yet. She altered the recipe a bit, and on her third try she finally deemed them satisfactory enough to give to Amity.
They were really good, actually. She wrote down the final recipe she used as she munched on one, then hid them after they cooled so King wouldn't be tempted by them. After all, what good would they be to give to Amity if they were all gone?

On her way to school the next morning, Luz felt irrationally nervous. She knew, logically, that Amity would appreciate the gesture of a thank-you gift, even if she didn't like the cookies.
But another part of her just couldn't stop worrying. What if Amity hated them? What if Luz thought the cookies were good, but they were actually terrible and Amity decided she didn't want to be friends with a human with weird tastes? Worse, what if Amity pretended to like the cookies for Luz's sake, but when her back was turned, she spat them out and laughed at her? Then their friendship would be ruined and it would be all Luz's fault and-
She stopped and took a breath. Amity wouldn't do that to her. And even if she didn't like the cookies, she wouldn't hate her and stop being friends with her over it. She replayed Eda's words in her head: Don't let yourself get too worked up over this. Whatever happens, happens.
Luz used those words as a mantra in her head to keep herself from flipping out again. When she got to Hexside and spotted Amity, a smile crossed her face. She took another deep breath, cranked up the volume of Eda's mantra in her head, and walked over to her.
"Hey, Amity!" she greeted cheerfully, hiding the box of treats behind her back.
The green-haired witch looked up at her, and a sweet smile came over her face. Luz's heart skipped a beat. "Hi, Luz," she replied.
"I, uh, made you something. As a thank-you for the fairy pie. It was really sweet of you. No pun intended," she added, trying to ease the tension (and, if she was being honest with herself, also a tiny bit to make Amity laugh).
It worked. Amity's face lit up and she giggled. "Thank you, Luz," she said, looking right into her eyes. She put so much sincerity into those three words that Luz swooned. It was like Eda had said; she'd gotten herself worked up over nothing.
After a moment, Luz realized that she was staring. She cleared her throat, her face flushed. Amity seemed to come to her senses, and her eyes immediately darted to the floor, her face red.
"Anyway, er, here are the cookies," Luz squeaked, holding out the box in front of her and avoiding the other girl's gaze.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Amity quickly glance up at her, then cast her gaze downwards again. "Uh- yeah, thanks," she said, reaching for the box.
Their fingers touched for a moment, and Luz could feel a tingle where they met. Amity pulled her hands away sharply, like Luz had shocked her.
"Okay, well, I have to go to class now, cause, y'know, school and everything. "Thank you again for the cookies, Luz. Bye!" Amity blurted, hurrying away.
Luz watched her go, then sighed. That same part of her was worrying that she'd scared her away. But Amity had liked the gift. So, Luz decided, as long as Amity was happy, she was too.
