The leaves shivered in the chilly air as they fell from the branches, the wind attacking them with its ruthless bite. Gravesfield had transitioned from its usual colors of grey and green to various hues of orange and brown. Pumpkins, skeletons, ghosts, bats and other creepy decorations had been popping up more and more as the month progressed.
Three people stood on the doorstep of a house, the older woman giving the door a sharp knock. "Luz!" a voice called from inside. "Can you get that, please?"
The door opened, revealing a fourteen-year-old girl dressed in a purple and white cat hoodie. Her face lit up when she saw the people standing there.
"Hi, Eda!" she greeted joyously, capturing her aunt in a tight hug.
Eda laughed, hugging her back. "Hey, kiddo."
    "Luz!"
The teen pulled away and looked down at the individual who'd called her name. Beaming up at her was a ten-year-old kid with short black hair. He was wearing a helmet that looked like a skull and a fuzzy grey dog onesie.
"King!" she wrapped him, too, in an embrace, then looked up at the last person. "Hi, Raine!"
"Hello, Luz," they said, smiling at her. "It's good to see you again."
She gave them a quick hug, too, then brought all three of them inside.
Camila said hello and they all talked for a while. Eventually the topic of Halloween came up.
"I really like your decorations, Camila," Raine complimented.
"Oh! Thank you. Luz helped me put them up," Camila replied.
"You should have more bones! And blood!" King piped up.
Luz sighed. "Yeah, we've been thinking of adding a bit more to spice it up—especially after the Blights made theirs ten times crazier than last year."
Eda snorted. "You're still in that petty little rivalry with the Blights?"
"I wouldn't call it a rivalry, but definitely a disagreement, yes," Camila answered.
"What happened to cause it?" Raine asked curiously.
"Odalia and Alador always acted like they were superior to everyone else. When Luz was a kid, they'd treat her like a dirty rat and treat their own children like royalty," Camila explained, setting her jaw. "Eventually I snapped and yelled at Odalia. Ever since then, I've tried to stay away from their family as much as possible, and keep Luz away from them, too."
"But they always seem to want to be better than us," Luz added bitterly. "At everything. Even something as simple as decorations for Halloween and Christmas."
Eda growled, looking out the window at Blight Manor next to them. "That woman is nothing short of demon spawn," she declared angrily.
Raine put a gentle hand on her shoulder, causing her to relax a bit. "She's always loved being the most important person in the room," they said.
"You should set their house on fire!" King exclaimed. "That'll teach them to never mess with you again!"
Camila laughed. "That would probably be more trouble than it was worth. But thanks for the idea, mijo."
"Well, we have to do something!" Luz said. "We can't just let them get away with being all snotty and rude to everyone."
"What we need to do is let it go," Camila advised. "Shouting at them won't solve anything."
