A Librarian's Trials

Luz turned, panting, back to Malphas. "Okay," she said in between breaths. "I've categorized the man-eating books. I've coaxed an ink demon into giving up some of its ink. And I just tamed the paper dragon." She took a deep breath and straightened up, although it was clear that she was still worn out. "Anything else?"

The master librarian regarded her, resting one hand under his chin in thought. "No, I think you're, like, all good. It's clear that she has someone who'd risk her life for her, so like, I think you're done."

The human breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Mr. Malphas," she said sincerely.

"Yeah, it's no problem. And you can just, like, call me Malphas." He started walking back into the library. "I can tell you're, like, head over heels for Amity. I figured I'd do something nice for her, since you're like, super dedicated to her."

Luz felt her face grow hot. "Oh, uh, thanks, Malphas."

Inside the library, he handed her Amity's staff card back. "Here you go, human. I, like, really appreciate your dedication to Amity's job. She got, like, really lucky in the girlfriend department."

Luz flushed. "Oh, um, we're not actually dating."

"Oh, you're not?" Malphas waved a hand dismissively. "Well, I'm sure you will be soon then. I can tell she, like, really likes you, and vice versa, obviously."

"Really?" Luz was skeptical, but hopeful nevertheless. Was it possible Malphas was right and Amity liked her back?

"Oh yeah," he said. "Definitely. Anyway, I actually have, like, one more favor to ask."

Luz inwardly sighed, mentally preparing herself for another fight or whatever he decided to throw at her. "Alright. What is it?"

"Can you, like, show me how good you are with kids?" the librarian asked. "I want to see if you and Amity can, like, help them together. Two's always better than one, and kids are, like, all for romance."

"Ok!" Luz agreed, ignoring the last part. "I'm great with kids."

The two of them went to the kid's corner, and Luz entertained them with some stories. Malphas watched calculatingly. When she was done, she came back over to him.

"So? How was I?" she asked.

"You're, like, really good with the kids," he said approvingly. "Would you mind coming with Amity to work sometimes and you two can, like, read to them together?"

"Sure! Can I, er, give Amity's card back to her now?"

He nodded, handing her the card. "Yeah, go ahead. Tell her you'll, like, help her with the kids every now and then."

"Will do!" Luz hurried out of the library. "Thank you, Malphas!" she called behind her, ignoring the librarian that tried to shush her on her way out.

Gary stomped up to him. "Why did you let that human back in here? She made an absolute MESS of it last time!"

Malphas put out his hand, a suggestion to stop talking. "Oh, don't worry about it. I'm just, like, helping Amity get back her job."
