Luz groaned, clutching her stomach tightly. Right now the only thing she was worried about was relieving the really bad cramp she was experiencing.

"Edaaaa," she called.

"Be there in a minute, kiddo," was the response.

Luz grabbed one of the pillows that her head wasn't currently resting on and promptly choked it by pulling it against her for extra warmth. After a moment, she heard footsteps from outside her door.

"So what's-" Eda stopped herself at the sight of her apprentice curled up on the floor. "Whoa. What happened to you?"

"Period," Luz muttered in response.

"Ahh," Eda said knowingly. "Do you need anything? I'd use a warmth spell, but y'know, no magic and all."

"Can you try making a heating pad please? Like, boiling the water on the stove or something and putting it in a rubber bag?" Luz suggested, her matter-of-fact voice muffled by the pillow, which she was now stuffing her face into.

"I'll do my best," Eda promised. "Do you want King to come in here with you?"

The back of Luz's head moved up and down.

Eda took that as a yes. "Okay, I'll get him in here. Get some rest, okay?"

The human shifted her face out of the pillow to smile weakly at her mentor (and because it was getting hard to breathe). "Thanks, Eda."

"Of course. Just let me know if you need anything."

The door swung shut, leaving her a silence broken only by the sound of Eda, Hooty and King's voices from outside. King came in after a bit of back-and-forth conversation between them.

"Hey, you okay, Luz?"

"Yeah, my stomach just hurts a lot right now." She lifted her head up a fraction of an inch and patted a spot next to her. He scurried over and kneaded her makeshift mattress beneath his bone claws before lying down peacefully.

"Thanks, King," she whispered, afraid to disturb him. His reply was a sleepy grumble, and she smiled, petting him rhythmically.

Her cramps still hurt, but at least now she had company.

Eda let her stay home from school that day after a call with Principal Bump. She spent most of the day lying on her mattress with King at her side, her pain level fluctuating between a slight sting to the sensation of a million super-sharp needles stabbing her. Sometimes Hooty would come in through the window to chat, or Eda would check up on her and bring her snacks, but for the most part it was quiet. She mostly entertained herself by re-reading Azura, even if her position wasn't the most comfortable to read in.

An hour or so after the school day ended, Willow and Gus came over to catch her up on what she'd missed. Reviews and informal lessons lead to giggles and carefree conversation—not that any of them minded. Luz was grateful for the support and distraction they provided her. They didn't need to come over and teach her what they'd learned that day, but they did anyway. Sometimes it was still hard to believe that there were people who wanted to spend time with her just because they liked her as a person. They each gave her a warm hug before leaving.

Amity visited after dinner, double-checking that she'd been caught up and then talking with her afterwards as if it was just any other day. She sat next to the mattress, close enough to Luz that she could hold her hand if she needed to. At a lull in their conversation, Luz hesitated.

"Hey, Amity?" she asked tentatively. The witch smiled to show she was listening, and Luz decided to go for it. "Um, can you...can we cuddle? You're really warm and I think it might help."

Amity grinned softly despite her pink cheeks. "Of course, if it'll make you feel better," she said. She laid down next to her girlfriend and wrapped her arms around her so it was like they were hugging while lying down. Luz buried her face in Amity's shoulder. She had been right; the witch was warm, and it reminded her of reading a fantasy book in fuzzy socks and drinking hot chocolate: sweet, comforting, and soothing for her stomach. Amity giggled, Luz's soft hair tickling her neck.

"How are you feeling now?" she asked quietly.

"Better," Luz replied, lifting her head up to look at her girlfriend. A smile was audible in her voice. "It doesn't hurt as much anymore. You're warm."

The grin that formed on Amity's face was brighter and prettier than any light glyph she could cast, and she suddenly got a very strong urge to draw it—although she probably wouldn't even come close to the real thing. The effect Amity had on her kicked in, and she could feel her cheeks warming up and her heart skipping on clouds.

"I'm glad," Amity said, interrupting Luz's brief gay panic. "I can be here anytime you need."

Argh, why did she have to be so sweet and considerate? Luz melted, her heart reduced to a pile of bloody red mush. She pulled the witch closer to her and stuffed her face in her shoulder again, holding in a giddy squeal.

Amity's gentle arms held her close, and Luz found herself wondering what she did to deserve the absolute goddess that was Amity Blight. How did I get so lucky? she asked herself. I was never that fortunate before I came here.

Maybe the magic of the Boiling Isles had granted her luck, along with amazing people and opportunities.

The knife in her stomach twisted again, causing her to tense with pain. So, alright, maybe not.

But Amity sent an abomination down to get Eda, carefully running a hand through the human girl's hair all the while, and she thought, maybe.

Even with the bad parts, maybe I did get lucky after all.
