The song that goes with the oneshot is above.

Luz took a deep breath. "Mama?" she said. Camila looked up at her standing on the stairs.

"Yes, mija?"

"¿puedo hablar contigo?" She switched into Spanish instinctively; it was what she did when she was anxious. (Can I talk to you?)

Her mother looked at her, concerned. "Of course. What do you need?"

"Well..." Luz stepped down from the stairway and sat on the couch with her mom. "I wanted to talk to you about maybe going back to the demon realm."

Camila's face hardened. "Luz, I already told you. It's too dangerous there. I don't want you going back."

"But mom!" Luz protested. "I finally found friends there that accepted me for who I really am. I even got a girlfriend! I was happy there. And I want to stay here with you, too, but I can't just leave all of them behind."

Camila regarded her, evidently deep in thought. "I'm glad that you made some friends, but I'm just looking out for your safety. The Demon Realm sounds too dangerous for a human to survive. Didn't you almost die?"

The teenager cast her eyes downwards. Her mom had a point: the Boiling Isles could definitely be dangerous, especially for a human. And she had almost died multiple times.

"I know it can be dangerous," she said slowly. "But I know how to protect myself. And I can do magic! I can fight against any threats that come near me, I promise."

Camila's eyes were sad. She put an arm around her daughter's shoulder tenderly. "I know you will," she acknowledged. "But I'm scared, Luz. I already lost your father. I can't lose you too."

They were both quiet for a moment after that, thinking their own thoughts about him. Then Luz spoke up.

"I know it's a risk," she said carefully. "But I've learned so much in the time I've been away. I promise I'll be careful. I just-" she rubbed her arm. "I really miss everyone."

Her mom looked at her for another moment. Then she sighed. "Alright. You can go back."

Luz immediately perked up. "Really?!"

Camila nodded, a smile barely visible on her face. "Yes. I can tell that these friends of yours mean a lot to you, and I can see how much your confidence has grown. So you can go back, as long as there's someone there who can take care of you."

Luz nodded. "Eda will." She threw her arms around her mother. "Thank you so much, mama! I promise I won't let you down."

Camila hugged her back. "I know you won't, mija," she said. "Now, tell me a bit more about that girlfriend of yours."

Luz hugged her mother tight. She inhaled the sweet, comforting scent of the place that she used to call home as she bade Camila farewell. It was only until the next time she visited, but she still wanted to savour every second of it.

They pulled away, and her mom put a hand on her cheek tenderly. "Stay safe, cariño. I love you."

"I love you too, mom." The girl gave her mother one last smile before turning away, heading towards the front door.

As the door shut behind her, something came over her and she started running. She wasn't quite sure what it was: missing everyone, or finalizing her decision, or just adrenaline. Whatever it was, it gave her momentum all the way up to the rickety old house where, hopefully, the portal would be.
