I Thought the Plane was Going Down (how'd you turn it right around?)

Amity knocked on Luz's door, standing as tall as she could and holding her breath. The urge to fidget was strong, but she resisted it, holding her breath and keeping her hands resolutely by her sides.

You have to do this, she reminded herself. If you don't apologize to her now, you might never get to be her friend again.

The sturdiness of her goal anchored her as Luz opened her door, face falling as she saw who was there.

"I'm sorry," Amity blurted. "I was upset when we were fighting but I still hurt you and- and no amount of personal stuff can justify that. So I'm sorry." She took a deep breath, glancing away from Luz's sugary brown eyes that seemed to drill holes through all of her lies and facades, exposing her to her most vulnerable self. "You don't have to forgive me. I just wanted to see if maybe we could-"

A pair of arms wrapped themselves around her torso, cutting her off mid-sentence. Amity reciprocated, and in the comfort of Luz's arms around her again, she could finally breathe.

When they pulled away, Luz gave her a grin. "Thank you," she said, her smile giving way to a more serious expression, "for saying that. I'm sorry too."

Amity smiled back. "Can you follow me? I set something up for you."

"Okay," Luz agreed. She shut the door behind her and followed obediently as Amity led her to the spot she'd chosen—their spot. She turned to see Luz's reaction and watched as her face lit up, recognizing the pink fluttering petals and open cliffs of their cherry blossom tree. The afternoon sun shone from through the branches, a colourful array of flowers dotted the grass, and blankets were set up beneath the tree in a cozy bed for them to lay on.

The radiant beam of Luz's smile shifted to spotlight Amity. "Did you do all of this?"

Amity flushed. "Yeah," she said, a childlike shyness overtaking her. "I noticed it was perfect timing for our tree to bloom, and I wanted to show you how sorry I was, so...yeah. What do you think?"

"I love it!" Luz laughed. Sparks zapped from where she grabbed Amity's hand and tugged her towards the tree as she ran. They both laughed, breathless and joyful, stopping when they reached the tree.

"I sort of threw it together," Amity admitted in between breaths as they sat down on the blankets. "I know it's not super fancy."

"Well, I think it looks great. It's still kinda hard to believe that you did all this for me," Luz said, her voice soft and compelling. Amity turned her head, feeling drawn to her for some inexplicable reason. Luz was smiling, looking at Amity like she was the most special person in the universe. Her eyes drifted down to the soft curve of Luz's lips, and her stomach started to squirm. She felt...warm, as if she had just taken a sip of hot Earl Grey tea. The warmth spread through her chest and swelled up like a tidal wave, overcoming her suddenly and powerfully. It happened so fast her head spun, making her dizzy.

The intensity of Luz's eyes was too much for Amity, so she looked away, swallowing the strange squirmy warmth that had risen in her. She cleared her throat.

"T-thank you." Aargh, now it was affecting her voice too?! She took a breath and continued, "And of course. I actually do care about you, you know." Her voice was teasing, but her statement was genuine. She hoped Luz could tell through her voice just how true it was.

By the small, grateful grin on her face, Amity guessed that she could. Luz pierced her with a sincere look, her eyes as rich and brown as the dirt in the forest. It caused Amity's breath to catch in her chest unexpectedly.

"I know," Luz finally said, her whole face lighting up as she smiled. Amity swore her heart stopped when Luz placed her hand on top of her own and added, "I really care about you, too."
