As the morning grew near, you knew you had to be getting close a stable, having traveled on horseback the entire night with Link by your side. You were already exhausted, and just knowing that you could have been settled somewhere sooner – had Link not gone off to chase a shooting star and then nearly get killed in a guardian attack – frustrated you. As you rode your horse across a bridge, you heard what you thought sounded like an accordion.
“Look! There’s a stable!” Link pointed out to the other side of the river where a stable was set up with a shrine nearby, and he rode up ahead of you, leaving you to only trail behind him as you got off the bridge. “Okay! Now we can register our horses and stop for some dinner!”
“And maybe some sleep too.” You groaned, sliding off your horse before patting it gently and walking to Link to help him dismount his. Goodness, he remembers such certain things such as his courage and the boy can’t even remember how to properly get off a horse…
“Hello, good sir!” Link chirped as he walked up to the front desk, and the stable owner leaned over and looked over him. “I was wondering if you could get horses registered for myself and my friend here – the princess of Hyrule, if you will.” The man glanced to you and then shrugged before holding his hand out to Link- an act that confused the boy.
“It will be twenty rupees per horse, young man.” He noted, and Link quickly turned to you as if he were asking for the rupees to pay. You held your hands up, indicating you didn’t have any, and he frowned nervously before turning back to the man, clearing his throat.
“Is forty rupees worth the entirety of Hyrule to you, sir? By giving the princess and I free registration, you would be allowing us to save Hyrule without any obstacles. Such as making money. So I ask again,” He leaned over the desk with a crooked smile. “Can my friend, the princess, and I, have our horses registered?” The man raised his eyebrow. “Please?”
“If your friend were really the princess, wouldn’t she carry all the money necessary for this exchange?” He asked, gesturing to you. Link went red and rubbed the back of his neck, trying to think of another solution. “I am sorry, young man, but I cannot provide you with any service if you are unable to make a fair trade with me.”
“But-“ You grabbed Link’s arm and pulled him away from the desk a bit, and you reached into your back and handed him a few pieces of amber.
“That man over there. He’s a merchant. See if he’ll take these for rupees, and then come back here once you’ve made a good trade.” He hardly had enough time to agree with your plan before you shoved him over to the merchant. He only gave you a thumbs up before strolling over to see if he could get a trade.
“Is it true?” You heard a voice behind you, and you turned around to be met with a tall, light blue rito, holding the accordion that you had been hearing play. You hardly noticed him in the time you were there, though. “Are you really the princess of Hyrule?”
“Oh, well, I’m a princess, but I’m not the princess. I’m only accompanying the hero while he gets ready to save Princess Zelda and defeat Ganon.” You explained to him, studying him a bit. He was familiar in a way, but you couldn’t figure out how. He was nowhere in the blurs. Or was he…?
“Well, I must say, it is still an honor to be in the company of a hero and a member of the royal family! I saw the Sheikah Slate with your friend over there and was a bit curious.” He smiled lowering his accordion down a bit. “Oh! And I nearly forgot to introduce myself.” He removed his wing from the strap on his instrument and held it out to you. “I’m Kass. I’m a traveling bard from Rito Village.” Kass! That was a name you remembered! You just didn’t know how he connected with your past. “What was your name again, princess?”
“My name is _____, and that over there is Link.” You gestured behind you to the hero, and Kass smiled and nodded. “We’re only staying at the stable for the night, and then we have to head to Kakariko Village to meet with Lady Impa.” You looked behind you to see how Link’s trade was going, and your eyes widened at the sight.
“_____! Beedle and I are best friends now! Isn’t that cool?!” He beamed as Beedle squeezed him tight, and you let out a short sigh and reached for the back of your neck, hearing Kass chuckling behind you. “I got the rupees, sir!” Link rushed over and practically slammed his hand down onto the wooden desk, the smile he had on seconds ago with Beedle never leaving him – if anything, it became brighter.
“I will get your horses registered right away, young man.” The stable owner hurried off to get the paperwork and the equipment and everything, and you and Link both cheered and high fived each other.
“Oh! Who’s this?” Link looked up to Kass, curiosity filling those large blue eyes of his.
“My name is Kass. I’m a Rito bard travelling from the North.” He told him, holding his wing out to Link. He smiled again and happily took it. “Princess _____ was telling me that you are the hero.”
“Pretty cool duo here, right?” Link went to lean on your shoulder, but when you quickly moved to the desk to sign the paperwork for the registration, he wasn’t paying attention and leaned so much he fell. You merely glanced behind you when you heard the thud. “Why did you move?!”
“Hey, I have papers to sign here. You’re doing your own thing here.” You went back to the paperwork, and the stable owner brought bridles and saddles out for Link to help him put them on the horses. Kass continued to play his music, and once your horses were set to go, you had them taken in for the night so you and Link could eat and get some rest.
Also learning a bit more about your new friend, Kass.
