"Kai?" You stepped into your son's room, noticing him sitting on the floor, winding new string around his bow. "May I come in?" You asked, and he glanced up at you for a moment before looking back, and you sighed and went to turn around to leave.

"Yes." He finally said, and you walked into the room and sat down next to him, watching as he finished tying and then moved to polishing the symbol carved into the wood. "What are you doing here? I thought you were having lunch with Amalia."

"I got done early," You told him. Really, once Amalia had said he wasn't feeling good and wanted to rest, you purposely ate a bit faster so you could come see him and make sure he was alright. "Are you doing okay?"

"Oh, yes, I'm doing perfectly fine after finding out my mother, who I've been told was killed from the time I was young, all of a sudden came back to the village for a 'family reunion'." Kai squeeze the paper he was using for polishing, and then looked at you to see the sudden sadness that washed over you when he said that. "I- I'm sorry." He got up and walked to his dresser to put his bow away, and he sighed as he leaned against it.

"No. I'm sorry." You got up and walked over to him, placing one of your hands on his back. "I know this isn't easy. It's a lot for all of us, Kai. I want you to know that." You released the breath you had been holding, and Kai looked back at you, and you could see the coldness in his eyes slowly melt away and reveal a look of sadness. Even fear. "I resent myself for leaving you and your sister. I had a duty to Hyrule, yes, but I also had a duty to my children."

"I know you didn't want to leave." Kai whispered, and he pushed himself away from the dresser and walked to his hammock and sat down. You walked with him, and he patted a spot for you to sit next to him. "It's just... my entire life, I've heard stories of you and father, and Amalia has all these memories of you guys and I don't." He rested his head in his hands, and you rubbed his back a bit to soothe him. "I remember nothing about you. I only know you from tales and pictures."

"You were only a baby when I left. Amalia was already nearly six, and I had no idea what was going to happen." You told him, and at the same time you tried to convince yourself. That you had no idea what was going to happen when you did. You just didn't know the extent of everything.

"I shouldn't be taking my anger out on you." He pressed his fist into his cheek while his elbow rested on his leg, and he glanced over at you. "I can't exactly take credit for being the best father in the world myself." He groaned a bit as he sat up, taking a deep breath.

"Amalia told me you were married and had a child," You said quietly, and he nodded slowly, closing his eyes. "I'm sure you're a good father, Kai."

"By letting both my wife and daughter go?" He asked, and you became visibly confused, while he only stood up and ran his fingers through his hair. "I'm sorry. I've said too much." He walked back to his dresser to grab his bow, but he found it was missing. And when he turned around, he saw that you had it.

"You can talk to me, Kai. I am your mother." It still hurt him to hear you say that. "You might think it's not right for me to step in like this, even after all this time, but that doesn't change the way I care about you and your sister. I love you two with all my heart." You stood up, and he was silent. But then you could hear quiet sobs.

You got to the dresser and tried to get him to look at you, but he wouldn't. He quickly wiped a tear from his cheek but finally looked back when you redirected his chin.

"Kai. Please talk to me." You pleaded, brushing strands of his blue hair out of his face. He let himself accept your comfort for a good while before he finally let down his walls and told you everything.

"There," You whispered as you pulled the blanket over your son's now sleeping body on his hammock, and you leaned over to place a gentle kiss on his forehead before you pulled away and looked over him. "Oh, Kai." You breathed, happy he finally let himself talk to you but sad about what he had gone through.
