The feelings and smells of the 4th of July have always been my favorite thing about this holiday. The fiery smell of wood burning for the barbecue, the fresh squeeze of lemons for lemonade. The heat from the sun, which always seems to shine the brightest on this day, gives the perfect excuse to eat all the ice cream that we want.
The excitement for what lies ahead for tonight when the sky is lit with fireworks, big and small ones with some gooey chocolate smores.
It's one of the holidays when my home becomes the busiest when Anthony's and Rebecca's family comes to help set everything up with me and Dad. Coretta and Becca would be busy in the kitchen, getting the food and snacks ready.
Andy, Joshua, and Johnny would be outside in the backyard. Helping Dad with the barbecue, setting up the games for the kids, and the picnic tables. Making a long family table that our family and Raymond's family would sit at together.
"Bro, move to the left," Andy said to Johnny as they carried the table close to the wooden fence in front of the one that they'd already set. They must have spent at least five minutes moving this one with Joshua's help.
Harboring a breath before shooting our older brother a narrowed stare, "I am moving to the left."
"No, your other left, egghead, " Andy said tiredly as if he had been repeating himself far too many times. "Use your left brain."
"I'm about to smash your left brain into the dirt if you don't shut up!" Snapping at Andy while moving in the right direction. Finally putting the table down, all three of them dropped onto the chairs.
"Thank God, this is over," Joshua said, leaning against the table with his elbows and his head. Both tiring brothers grunt in agreement with their brother-in-law, "Moving furniture around with you two is like teaching a blind man how to paint."
Clicking his tongue while Johnny just grunts at Joshua's comment. Before he said annoyed and lazily, "Andy's the one who wouldn't pick a spot to put the damn tables. Or if it's too close to the fence and not under the shade."
He was too tired to take whatever would be blamed for taking a long time to set the picnic tables. Yet, Andy's head shot up from the lazy position that it was in before firing lasers at our brother.
Leading to them pointing fingers at each other, blaming one another for whatever while Joshua was just chilling in his spot, not caring anymore.Becca and Coretta were busy setting up the two tables while listening to the two brothers' arguments, "Same old, same old."
Nodding her head with a wide smile, "You should see how Xavier and Jayce fight and argue. Like father like sons."
Coretta slightly nodded to the two boys who were playing with a toy car. Who was now arguing about whose turn was it next to play with the control?
Xavier Koe and Jayce Makana are Anthony's and Coretta's boys. They're practically the spitting image of my brother while having their mother's sweet smile and laughter. Being four years apart from one another, they are inseparable.
The two boys then just forget about the remote toy car and start playing tag with their cousins, Zander, Cade, and Bethany. They are Rebecca and Joshua's children and their pride and joy.
Bethany Malia is their eldest daughter, who's about fourteen years old and about to reach high school.
Zander Peni is eleven years old and has more of my sister's brain as well as her beauty. But he likes to be in nature and like hiking.
Cade Keala has his father's athletic side and good looks. Being the top player on his elementary school basketball team. And is right down, a sweetheart who always likes making everyone smile and happy.
